Chapter 26 Humanity is strong and ancient

The wide black clothes could not hide the slim figure of this nun. When walking, it was graceful and magnificent. This was like the flame of fire, the light of lamps, and the precious color of pearls, jade, gold and shells, which naturally revealed. The nun was walking in the shadow of the lantern behind the drooping girl. Zeng Yu did not see the face of the nun clearly nor heard the nun talking. But just such a vague impression made Zeng Yu feel that this nun had a state that could attract attention.

But at this time Zeng Yu had no time to pay attention to it. He jumped up suddenly, with a look of alertness. Following the skirt of the drooping girl, there was a big yellow-haired dog. The yellow dog opened its mouth, spitting out red tongue, and its eyes were green. He was looking at him and Sixi. His uncle, Mr. Hanlong, once said that in addition to being wary of thieves and villains, he also had to be wary of being bitten by dogs, especially wild dogs. If they were bitten, they might have their lives.

"This scholar, don't be shocked. Ah Huang is very obedient and never bites people. Don't see it barking so fiercely."

The drooping girl smiled and walked towards the edge of the Woniu Stone with a small lantern. At this time, the four-fish lantern inserted on the earthen wall was completely extinguished. The figure of the fisherman's servant on the earthen wall suddenly became dark and blurry, and the girl raised the lantern and came closer.

Zeng Yu bowed and said, "This lady, this master—"

In the Ming Dynasty, some called female nuns in Gandi, some called Shigu and some called Zigu. For the elderly female nuns, there are also called Nimu. Zeng Yu said, "Thank you for borrowing the lights. I want to disturb you and ask for a scoop of water."

The girl said to Zeng Yufu for a blessing. The girl who was hiding in the dark behind the girl said to him, but she heard the girl say, "Mom, it's these two people. He is a scholar who is taking the exam. This scholar fell and fell down on the night road and shed a lot of blood. Ah, did he faint?" The last sentence was asked by Zeng Yu.

The little Xi Dun was covered in blood on the face and his head was scattered. He leaned against the earthen wall at this time and looked like he was fainting. Zeng Yu said, "Xiao Jie accidentally fell and injured his forehead and knees. Now he is asleep." He thought to himself: "Is this nun the girl's mother? It's not uncommon for nuns to have a daughter, but it's rare to live together. Where did the old woman go?"

The girl asked again: "It doesn't matter, do you want to hire a doctor? Oh, that's fine. I'll bring you water. Give me the gourd." The girl saw Zeng Yu taking out the gourd but there was no water on the wall. She wanted to ask Zeng Yu to hand her the gourd to fill the water, but Grandma Yan scolded her fiercely and had to go down.

Zeng Yu took out the gourd and handed it to the girl with both hands, bowed and said, "Thank you, thank you."

"Mom, you are carrying a lantern."

The girl handed the lantern to the nun, took the gourd, and smiled at Zeng Yuzhanyan, with a crisp and beautiful voice: "Scholar, wait." She turned around and returned to the yard lightly, and the big dog named Ah Huang quickly followed.

The nun called out softly: "Be careful, it's dark, don't fall." It was indeed the tone of a loving mother.

The girl agreed, and her back flashed into the wooden door.

Zeng Yu noticed that this girl did not wrap her feet. Girls from gentry families usually started to bind their feet at the age of seven. Those who did not wrap their feet were often because they were poor and needed girls to help with farm work. In addition, the depraved women in Zhejiang prohibited foot binding, and foot binding became a symbol of their status. Zeng Yu's hometown of Yongfeng was also popular. Women who didn't wrap their feet were despised as "Chai Po", meaning that they could go up the mountain to chop wood to do rough work. Such women naturally would not marry a good family.

"Where can I ask my son, my surname is yours, where will I take the exam?"

The nun looked at Zeng Yu coldly, and then spoke inquiring. The nun hung the lantern very low, and the lower edge of the lantern touched the grass stem on the surface. There were pictures on all sides of the lantern paper, which were four vivid kittens. When the lantern swayed, the four kittens were lively and as if they were about to move.

Zeng Yu replied: "I am in the next surname Zeng, and I went to Yuanzhou Prefecture for an examination. I was greedy for a journey. I missed the stay and disturbed my aunt." As I spoke, my eyes kept looking at the cat painted on the lantern.

The nun said with a "Oh": "It's still too late to go to Yuanzhou. The young master lives in a foreign land and returns to Yuanzhou for the sake of the exam, right?"

The imperial examination has strict requirements on the household registration of candidates. If they live in a foreign land, if they fail to obtain the local household registration, their children must return to their original homes to take the scientific examination. If Zeng Yu had obtained the Yongfeng household registration when he was not his father, then if he wanted to take the scholar, he had to go back to Ganzhou Prefecture.

Of course, Zeng Yu could not tell this nun about making up for the exam. He said vaguely, looking up at the nun's appearance, the nun's lanterns drooped on the ground, he should have intentionally prevented Zeng Yu from seeing her face clearly. In fact, he was just a few steps apart, how could he not see clearly? This nun had a bald head naked, with very short hair glowing blue. Bai Juyi's poem describes a nun saying "head, green eyebrows, thin eyes". The bald head looks blue at first glance, and generally shaved head will not look good, but this nun gives people the feeling that the bald head is exquisite and beautiful, and the black hair of women in the world becomes a burden-

The light and shadow are bright and dark, and the facial contours of the girl's face are extremely delicate. Since the girl is the mother of the drooping girl, she should be thirty years old, but in this dark night, she looks like a young nun with a fluttering black clothes—

Si Xi, who was sleeping, let out a painful moan, and she was uncomfortable sleeping while sitting under the earth wall. She tilted her head and simply lie on her side to sleep, but she hit the wound on her forehead. She sat up again with a "ah" sound, and woke up in pain. She was shocked to see the scene in front of her in a daze. Who was the person with a bald head in black robe? The light of the lantern was from bottom to top, and Si Xi also looked from bottom to top, so it looked very strange.

Zeng Yu hurriedly said, "Sixi, this master is the master here, and I have asked her for water to drink." Seeing that Sixi was holding the earthen wall and was about to stand up, she quickly stepped forward and helped her.

Sixi stood up straight, feeling that her forehead and knees were more painful than before, she felt so thirsty and had smoke in her throat. Seeing that the young master was obviously not sleeping, the little Xifu bowed to the nun and said, "This female Bodhisattva, let me go to the yard to find Zhang Xiaocouch to rest. I can stay outside. My young master is going to take the exam. It's not okay to have a good rest. Amitabha Buddha, female Bodhisattva, be fine, cough, cough-"

Sixi felt that he had implicated the young master and felt very guilty. What kind of face he, a little Xi slave, cares about, so he whispered and wanted the young master to rest with Zhang's bed. After saying so many words in one breath, Sixi started coughing.

The nun felt pity. The scholar was only in his twenties and the servant was even younger. He said, "Please follow me. Niun found a place for your master and servant to rest, but please don't make noise and leave immediately tomorrow morning."

Four were very happy, Zeng Yu didn’t want to stay under the wall overnight. Although the gardenias were fragrant, there were also many mosquitoes. The smell was hard to absorb. He hurriedly said, “Thank you, my aunt, I will leave at dawn.”

The nun said "hmm", drew half a circle in her hand, and turned around and walked towards the courtyard gate.

Zeng Yu helped Sixi to follow him. Sixi turned to look at the books and bags beside the Woniu Stone and said, "Young Master, you still have luggage."

It’s okay to have a book book, but there is money in the bag. Although it’s not necessarily so coincidental that someone took it away after a while, it’s still better to be careful. It’s already too late, so it can’t be worse. Zeng Yu grabbed the bag and put it on his arms, and followed the nun into the yard with Sixi.

The girl happened to step out and said in surprise: "Mom, you are willing to let them in!"

The nun said: "Let them spend the night in the Tealiao cottage and leave early tomorrow morning."

The girl was a little happy and chuckled, "My mother is so kind, I know she can't bear it."

The nun said, "Don't let me take them away." He handed the lantern in his hand to the girl.

The girl agreed, took the lantern and said to Zeng Yu: "Scholar, please come with me. The little book boy is careful when walking, don't fall again, there are steps here." He said: "Speak softly, don't wake up Grandma Yan, otherwise it will be a big deal."

The master and servant agreed, following the girl around a big house, walked past a small courtyard, and arrived in front of a house. Seeing that there was hanging thatch on the eaves, the girl said, "This is the teahouse, the small room where my mother drinks tea. You two were on the ground for a night, and there were bamboo mats on the ground. Look, this is your gourd. If you had known you would come in, you wouldn't have to fill water. There would be water in this teahouse."

The girl spoke unfast, her tone was gentle, and her voice was very pleasant. She asked again: "Where is that fish lantern, oh, it's still stuck on the wall. I'll pick it up, and I'll leave this for you."

Zeng Yu said: "I will go with the lady. I have books and I am still outside the door and I want to move in."

It was still a girl carrying a cat lantern. Zeng Yu followed her and walked out of the yard door, pulled the fish lantern from the crack of the earthen wall and handed it to the girl, then carried a heavy book. When she was about to pick up the cat lantern, the girl said, "I'll take a look for you."

Zeng Yu said, "Thank you." He followed the girl into the door with his book on his back, stood for a while, and waited for the girl to tie the door again.

The girl came over with two lanterns, one light and one dark, and said as she walked: "Scholar, have you not asked about your surname yet?"

Zeng Yu smiled and said, "My surname is Zeng Yu and his name is Jiuli."

The girl said in surprise: "What fish, carp?"

Zeng Yu said: "Well, it's a carp, it's called a fishing fisherman with three dots of water."

The girl "Girl" smiled and shook the extinguished fish lantern in her hand in the air, saying, "There are fish on it. Did Scholar Zeng see it?"

Suddenly I heard someone coughing lightly in the dark, and the girl coughed, and the girl said, "Mom, why are you standing there in a black dust?"

The girl in the dark said, "Give the lantern to Mr. Zeng - Mr. Zeng, you are negligent. Don't leave the teahouse at night. If the yellow dog recognizes her, it may bite people."

Just now, the girl came in and out, and the big yellow dog also followed in and out, with a very loyal feeling.

The girl argued: "Ah Huang doesn't--"

"Okay, Mr. Zeng, go to the teahouse quickly. Please remember that you must leave tomorrow morning."

The nun came out of the darkness and interrupted the girl's words.

Zeng Yu bowed and said, "Thank you, Master, for taking in it. My master and servant left as soon as it dawn." After that, he took the cat lantern from the girl and walked towards the teahouse. The girl behind him complained carefully: "Why is my mother so inhumane, like Grandma Yan?"

Zeng Yu didn't hear the nun's answer clearly. He walked over and thought: "It seems that there are three people living here, Grandma Yan and this mother and daughter. It's really not easy for Sixi and I to come in to have a place to stay. People in the Ming Dynasty are still very humane, and the ancient style still exists."
