Chapter 71 Visiting Krakow (Part 2)

When southern Poland gradually implemented the transformation of serfs, the Grand Duke of Desai, as the monarch of the country, must play a role in leading the way, and first liberate serfs in his own exclusive territory.

But it's fine if the fate of those black workers with ten-year or even twenty-year contracts was not much Poles wanted to go or were willing to care about, and even the most radical Jacobins believed that the Grand Duke of Warsaw was really good to black workers.

At least these niggers have broken away from slavery and have private property. They live on the banks of the Vivas River and will not be bullied by outsiders. The labor they engage in and the fruits of labor handed over are just paying the principal and small amount of interest paid by the Grand Duke Desai to rescue them.

After the Warsaw Parliament celebrated the regaining of Silesia and listed Auschwitz as its territory, Desai sent someone to inform the five estates of the large and small masters, asking them to go to the capital Krakow, to visit the Southern Tour Commissioner, Spelansky, and unconditionally followed the orders of the lord's private envoy to completely liberate the 2,800 serfs in the estate.

A few days ago, the heads of five estates jointly sent a letter, reporting to the lord: the serfs have been transformed into contract farmers and have no excessive labor anymore. Women who breastfeed or take care of children can get rest. The punishment for those who make mistakes is limited to admonition rather than corporal punishment. In addition, they will adhere to the instructions of the inspector and prepare to plan to establish schools, orphanages, hospitals, etc. in Auschwitz.

In the letter, the general managers not only made contributions to it, but also sought assistance, saying that due to the implementation of the above reform measures, the manor economy became worse, and the books were not enough to make ends meet, and Grand Duke Desai needed to invest money.

It’s okay if you don’t talk about money; when you talk about money, time travelers become extremely sensitive and highly vigilant.

Desai received this letter on his way to Krakow when he left Wroclaw, the capital of Silesia. At the beginning, he felt good about himself and believed that the just act of liberating serfs would require the understanding of the nobles and the cooperation of the people. However, when he saw the manors united to ask for money for money, Desai began to doubt some of the tricks in it.

So Desai called Girlovsky, who had recovered from injury, and asked the guards to tie several Polish soldiers from serfs, disguised themselves, and rushed to Auschwitz and five nearby manors to visit the real situation in the local area.

When Grand Duke Desay drove to his direct jurisdiction as Lord Auschwitz, he saw beautiful scenery everywhere. The released peasants lived and worked in the happy manor, and took out bread, salt, and carried out the icons in the rural church, holding various forms of grand welcoming ceremonies, sincerely thanking the monarch for giving them a beautiful and free life.

In the first manor, several women with beautiful faces and babies first stood up to welcome the Grand Duke Desai. They claimed that they were kind lords to relieve their men of labor and also gave pregnant women various living preferential treatment;

In the second manor, a priest was surrounded by a group of children with joy, holding a cross with a statue of Jesus' martyrdom in his hand, standing at the intersection to welcome the arrival of Grand Duke Desai. Under the guidance of the priest, the children sang hymns to God and the lord;

In the third manor, a peasant representative wearing a sky blue robe and a good appearance was standing in front of the Grand Duke Desai, speaking with a slight and dancing hand-to-face narrating the happy life of himself and his family since the reform of the manor;

...

When he arrived at Auschwitz, Grand Duke Desay, led by the old mayor, visited the planned primary schools, orphanages, nursing homes and hospitals without hesitation until the evening.

"Damn a bunch of bastards, their acting skills can be on the big stage of the Paris Opera House!"

As soon as he returned to the lord's residence, Desai scolded the sky and the earth in front of the accompanying adjutant. Cedero and others, who were standing aside, looked at each other in front of him. The happy monarch changed his temper as soon as he landed.

The time traveler who was a two-year-old man was already over 60 years old. When he was doing business in the Celestial Empire in his previous life, he had personally seen all kinds of fraud and even participated in it. Such tricks were not at all seen by him. Unexpectedly, in Poland in the 19th century, such things were also uncommon to deceive superiors and hide their subordinates and make money.

Sure enough, at night, when Gillowski appeared in front of Grand Duke Desai, the truth was revealed.

Those cunning and stupid manor managers did not implement the regulations on liberating serfs. Instead, they had a joint relationship with the unscrupulous mayor of the town and the unscrupulous rural priests, colluded with each other, and tried to deceive the Grand Duke Desai who was inspecting here.

The headmasters of various estates privately tampered with their books, concealed their land tax income, and continued to force farmers to engage in numerous illegal corvee labor to seek benefits for themselves; in Auschwitz, the mayor and his colleagues planned the school, orphanage and hospital on the drawings, forever remained on a clearing, and the funds for the construction of the above-mentioned public utilities entered their private pockets;

As for the church priests, it is even more shameful. They use the priesthood to constantly charge farmers with heavy taxes. The children around the priests are nominally students, but in fact they are small servants and child laborers who can be driven and played with at will. In order for parents to get their children back, they must spend all their money and sell all valuable items at home.

"Girlovsky, tomorrow morning, you bring fifty soldiers with you to do what you think you should do. Remember, there is no mercy, no forgiveness!" After hearing this, the angry Desai gave an order to his chief guard.

In fact, this is the execution order of Desay to the mayor of Auschwitz, the manor of the estate, and the country priest. Anyone who dares to deceive the monarch must pay the price they deserve for their stupid behavior.

At noon the next day, when gunfires of the execution of the criminal sounded on the walls on the south side of the church, Desai had already set off for Krakow. He wanted to question Spilansky in person, the Russian defector who was given important duties by him, could not even solve the problem of a small Auschwitz serf. It was nonsense to talk about "going smoothly" and "obvious results".

On the way, Desai was shaking his carriage, his eyes closed slightly, and his head resting on the back. He was rethinking a question: the smart Spelansky could not make such a low-level mistake. Those shameless people who fiddled with fake hands could successfully deceive the ignorant nobles, but they would never have deceived the "son of the priest" who lived in the Russian countryside for many years and knew the truth.

Therefore, when Spelansky knew that the wise Grand Duke Desai would definitely find all kinds of disadvantages inside and outside the manor when inspecting the territory, he deliberately did not remind him, because the Russian exiles were expressing a dissatisfaction to the new monarch.

“I have too much responsibility, but I have too little power!”

Except for the secretary and followers around him, Spelansky was almost a powerless inspector. He had no soldiers and soldiers to be transferred, no money and official positions to reward meritorious subordinates, no power to punish madmen, no...

Immediately, Desai ordered the carriage and the guards to divert the route to Katowitz and join the Guard Division there with the First Army.

After arriving in Katowitz, Desai entrusted the chief of staff of the army, General Dombrowski, with his private message, to Warsaw overnight, unite to desai's forces to make a political deal with the lower house of parliament.

Desai instructed: "Please tell the Speaker of the House of Commons, His Excellency Earl Smavakhovski, that the Grand Duke of Warsaw is willing to take the initiative to reduce the direct management period of Silesia, and reduce the original 10-year independent taxation rights and 5-year official appointment and removal rights to three years; but in exchange, I must obtain direct management of military and political management in southern Poland and Krakow, well, at least three years!"

Two days later, after a not-fever debate, the noble parliament agreed to the request of the Grand Duke of Warsaw.

Now, for the devastated and barren southern Poland after several wars, the greedy aristocratic parliamentarians seem to yearn for Silesia, which has a large population, developed industry and commerce, and abundant water and grass. They are eager to take over that area smoothly in three years, thereby gaining more trade wealth, more manor space, and more labor.

When the above agreement was reached, Desai immediately appointed Spelansky as the plenipotentiary governor of southern Poland. He also ordered the commander of the First Army, Stanislaw Mokronovsky, to lead his troops to the Krakow area to cooperate with the governor from the front;

In addition, Desai also appointed his capable confidant, Colonel Penduwas, who had just arrived in the Silesian Legion, to follow Silesia and establish a military police headquarters in the capital Krakow, a military police and intelligence agency covering the entire southern Poland.

On November 25, the late-arriving Grand Duke Desai finally arrived in Krakow, accompanied by the Guards Division.
