Chapter 17 The Montijo Massacre (Part 1)

Since taking charge of the Dominion of Hruna and taking control of Catalonia-Aragorn, Desai has always highly praised and respected scientists, engineers and scholars who have created, invented and innovated new technologies, new products and fields. In his opinion, the powerful force that truly promotes the development of human history is neither a variety of ideology nor a great conqueror who kills people, but an inventor and scientist who guides and masters scientific knowledge. Especially after the first industrial revolution began.

Even though these people were in a hostile position, Desay never wanted to imitate the time traveler who loved to eat bacon and cooked cabbage. In the book "In the Name of Revolution", he sent Irish terrorists to massacre famous figures such as Watt, Stephenson, David, Kearney, Faraday, and Feaberen on the British Isles.

As the superior ruler, Desai was extremely disgusted with terrorists who created panic in their territory and undermined the good situation of stability and unity. In a series of legal notices issued by the Duke of Hruna and the Manresa government, these shameless acts that actively "integrate with the people" but use innocent civilians as shields are regarded as "terrorism" that seriously violates humanitarian principles.

According to the current laws, any rioter who secretly colludes with the Cadiz government in the southern part of the peninsula or other foreign hostile forces to incite dissatisfaction in various parts of Catalonia and Aragon, commits violent crimes against active-duty soldiers or foreign immigrants, and attempts to overthrow the legitimate government, whoever is convicted by the court will be treated as death penalty.

In early 1810, when Desay decided to go to Portugal, he forced the Sai Cabinet to grant the Ministry of Gendarmerie unrestricted "unlimited law enforcement power". This provision is made before the end of this year, the military police headquarters led by Colonel Carls can bypass local sheriffs or district prosecutors and directly arrest and interrogate all suspects suspected of being terrorists. In addition, in handling terrorist cases, the special court must be led by the Ministry of Gendarmerie, and the district court can only send people to watch.

In fact, Desai is to make the Ministry of Military Police take on the triple role of police, prosecutor and judge. Although this pro-coordination has aroused dissatisfaction among many people, including Professor Say, Desai replied coldly: "When millions of people in Catalonia and Aragon have placed their future better lives on me, as the supreme ruler of this new country, my words need to be as sweet as honey. My arms must be strong and powerful, able to represent discipline, fairness and majesty punishment, and kill all factors that lead to or may lead to the division of the country, social unrest, and public unrest in the cradle."

Although the use of the pro-coordinated method of gendarmerie law enforcement has caused some protests, Duke Hruna still did his own thing and ignored it. The only compromise is to recognize that the highest law enforcement authority of the Ministry of Gendarmerie is valid for one year and will automatically expire after New Year's Day in 1811. Later facts have proved that it was precisely because of the efficient operation of the Ministry of Gendarmerie that severe social unrest occurred in some towns, maintained normal social order, and protected the lives and property safety of most peaceful residents.

From early 1810 to May, the Ministry of Military Police successfully investigated and dealt with 24 illegal organizations that incited, created riots and riots, arrested, interrogated and eventually shot them, as many as 150 people. After the Desay Division set out from Zaragoza to fight for Portugal, there were no riots that were worried about in Catalonia and Aragon, and the chaotic scene of people living in poverty, and it still showed a good situation of peace and prosperity.

At the same time, the Desay Expedition Division traveled south safely. From Zaragoza to Madrid, to Toledo, Cáceres and other places, the officers and soldiers generally maintained a relatively equal and friendly manner, and dealt with the residents of the towns along the way. Although the Spanish people did not like this multi-ethnic French army, they did not cause any disaster for themselves. After all, these invaders were still polite. They neither forced food nor bullied women, nor desecrated their churches and beliefs.

Of course, there are also troubles along the way. Starting from Toledo, one or two fallen soldiers will occasionally be kidnapped by waiting guerrillas or local residents. Usually, the military police will be surrounded by the nearby villages and towns with the kidnapped troops. Then they will be polite and then soldiers, and the priests will go to the town to negotiate with the residents and hand over the captured soldiers.

If the soldiers have been killed, the mayor needs to hand over the murderer and give the military police to the military police waiting outside the town for trial. If the mayor deliberately conceals and condons and shelters, the military police will randomly select 8 to 10 people from the townsmen, and together with their mayor, they will shoot them collectively. In addition, the military police will also confiscate the township public property worth 2,000 riyals, half of which will be compensated to the families of the victims afterwards.

The above process basically complies with the rules of occupying the army recognized by European countries. With the assistance of the priests of the army, most of the captured soldiers were safely released, and only three towns that could not or refused to hand over the murderer were subjected to limited retaliatory punishment from the military police.

However, when the Desai Division reached the town of Montijo, which was only 25 kilometers away from Badajos Fortress, the originally smooth march changed significantly on the last journey. A sudden vicious case of murdering soldiers and priests and the bad consequences caused by them made Desai himself very worried.

At 3 pm on June 9, five soldiers from the North Aragon regiment who were allowed to leave the barracks were kidnapped on their way to the town of Montijo, 2 kilometers away. Two hours later, the gendarmerie on duty found the bodies of five captured soldiers in a deserted farm not far from Montijo.

When these poor soldiers died, they were still wearing torn camouflage uniforms. The brutal bandits who tortured them used large 20 cm nails to penetrate the hands and feet of the five unfortunate people and nailed them to the barn door. When the military police discovered the five soldiers who were killed, blood was still flowing from their wounds, and their bodies were poured backwards, with their heads down, and there was a handful of firewood that had been extinguished shortly, roasted...

After hearing the news, the officers and soldiers of the North Aragon regiment who arrived at the case were all indignant after witnessing the misfortune of the five comrades-in-arms, and were excited. All the soldiers of the regiment picked up their arms and surrounded Montiho Town, vowing to tear the murderer apart. If the regiment commander Major Mardan had not come to comfort him in time, and the military police tried their best to dissuade him, the North Aragon regiment might have washed away the entire Montiho Town.

In the evening, a clergyman with the army was allowed to enter the town of Montijo, which had been surrounded by the North Aragon regiment. According to the normal process, the priest will meet with the mayor and the rural priest, hoping that they will hand over the murderer of the soldiers. However, the development of the matter was unexpected. When the priest of the army came to the small chapel at the entrance of the village, the priest guarding there announced in public that the priest of the God in front of him was actually a demon accomplice. Then, a thug rushed over and shot the priest of the army to death.

...

When the Northern Aragon Regiment surrounded Montijo town, General Barbanegel was participating in professional training courses for middle and senior officers. More than 30 generals and school-level officers listened attentively to advanced geometry, trigonometry, differential and integral teachings taught by several military scholars, and practiced how to make drawings, learn how to draw combat plan diagrams, section diagrams and maps, etc.

This is the traditional practice of Desai drawing on Napoleon's expedition to Egypt and carrying a large number of scholars to train officers under his command. Most of the officers in the Desai Division, especially senior officers, have never experienced regular military academies. Although they have been professional soldiers for many years, have rich command experience and strong fighting will, they lack the necessary military literacy. Many people do not even know how to read and make drawings, and they also know very little about the structure and launch principles of guns and cannons.

Therefore, every once in a while, Desai will organize experts, scholars or professional sergeants to train senior officers, which will be listed as a reference standard for promotion of military ranks. In his opinion, even an infantry commander should master the language of the Three Kingdoms or above, understand the training and combat methods of cavalry and artillery, be able to get rid of the staff around you, understand it alone, and draw marching and combat maps.

Desai hopes that the officers under his command can follow the example of later generations of Desai, through meticulous systems, scientific organizations, professional training, beautiful uniforms and moving military music, they can form rigorous, meticulous, good at planning and dispatching, and quite elegant characteristics, thus creating one war miracle after another.

"What? Five soldiers and the priests of the army were killed in Montijo town one after another?"

“The Northern Aragon regiment was capturing the town of Montijo?

"Damn bastards now slaughter the city?"

After walking out of the temporary class and listening to the adjutant's report, General Barbanegel was stunned. He could not believe the above facts. On the last day of arriving at the destination, the third brigade led by himself actually caused a big fuss.

Faced with the chief's repeated questioning, the deputy nodded repeatedly and redescribed the facts he saw and heard.

"Damn military police, why don't they stop it?" the general roared at his adjutant.

"In fact, the gendarmes can't stop it at all. You don't know how the thugs harmed our soldiers. You also regard the priests who talked about as demons and execute them in public outside the church." The adjutant carefully defended his comrades.

After a brief vent, General Barbanegel fell back in a deserted state and had to consider how to recover after the town was slaughtered. A few hours ago, General Desai and his division staff rushed to Badajos fortress under the escort of the cavalry brigade and appointed the commander of the 1st Brigade, General Dernie as the interim commander of the Desai Division.
