Chapter 23 Four major mathematical journals
If you ask a student who is studying for mathematics what he feels when he is in the mathematics department, he will probably look at you with a melancholy look and say, this major sounds very high-end, but it really makes you feel as if you are watching an American drama without subtitles.
So what does it feel like to study in Princeton? It's like participating in Wuyazi's Zhenlong Chess Game Conference. You not only have to become a famous young man in the world, but also have to show the IQ of crushing all competitors in the world. Only in this way can you get the true teaching of Wuyazi and enter this world-ranked department.
But even after rounds of screening, not every student has the opportunity to publish a paper in the Mathematics Annual, because the young master is the young master after all. There are countless heads of famous sects in the world, the martial arts legends who lived in seclusion for many years and practiced martial arts for the previous generation, and the young masters of the previous generation, although they have talent and work hard enough, they have lost decades of internal energy cultivation, while the annual Mathematics Annual only has such a few pages.
Of course, the magazine with the highest influence factor in the mathematics world is not the Journal of Mathematics but the Journal of Mathematics in Sweden, but this does not mean that the Journal of Mathematics is not as good as Journal of Mathematics. There are differences in their respective areas, historical reasons, and changes in academic hotspots.
For Lu Qiujian now, with Professor Wiles' relationship, it is easier to submit articles to the Mathematics Annual. With this article, he can open up a small situation in the mathematics community and lay the foundation for successor plans. After all, in the academic world, it is absolutely impossible to have no reputation!
As for why the first journal in the mathematics world came from Sweden, not the United States, Britain, or even France, Russia, and Japan, this starts with the Swedish mathematical tradition.
Everyone is curious why the Nobel Prize in Natural Science only has three categories: physics, chemistry, medicine and physiology, but no mathematics. There is a rumor that Nobel himself was NTR by a mathematician, who is Mita Levre, the founder of the Swedish mathematics community.
Mita Levler was born and died in Stockholm, the capital. He worked at Stockholm University for a long time. He is a student of Weirstrasse, a famous German mathematician and professor at the University of Berlin. Mita has many classical work in mathematical analysis and complex variable functions, and has written 119 kinds, including the famous Mita Levler theorem and Mita Levler matrix. Mita is also an excellent educator and outstanding organizer. Through his hard work, Sweden has the best mathematical research materials and libraries in the world at that time. In 1882, he founded and published the first-class mathematical journal "Journal of Mathematics", which trained and hired famous scholars such as Fredholm, Furagmen, and von Kok, making Sweden one of the world's mathematical research centers at that time.
It can be said that with his own strength, he built Sweden into a mathematical research center comparable to Cambridge, Princeton and Göttingen. Since then, many talents have emerged in the Swedish mathematics community.
Then his disciples Fredholm and von Cock inherited and developed this advantage. Fredholm mainly engaged in the study of equation theory. He gave the basic solutions to the partial differential equations of elliptical coefficients, and received attention in the study of integral equations to solve the "Fredholm equation". Therefore, he won the "Paris Academy Award" and became an academician of the Academy of Sciences in Sweden and France.
A theorem proven by Cork in 1901 reveals a stronger conditional form of the Riemann conjecture equivalent to the prime theorem. In his 1904 paper "On a continuous curve without tangents constructed by basic geometric methods", he described the construction method of a snowflake curve, which was one of the earliest fractal curves, later called "Cock Snowflake".
After Mita Levler went, Kaleman took over his work and began to take charge of the Mita Institute and Journal of Mathematics. His main contributions were in functional theory, integral equation theory and spectral theory, and he also named several theorems, laws, inequality, integral kernel and orthogonal polynomials after him. Until now, Kaleman's inequality is still a hot field in inequality research.
Cramer, who was in his same period, first studied analytical number theory, and then turned to probability theory. In his book "Statistical Mathematical Methods", he wrote, he explained statistical inference methods based on a strict basis of probability theory. The book was widely used as a textbook in various countries, and in 1960, China also published a Chinese translation.
Later, the Mita Institute and Journal of Mathematics were replaced by Carlson. He served as the chairman of the International Mathematics Alliance and an academician of the Swedish Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Hungary and other academicians.
He also won the Steele Prize and Wolf Mathematics Prize for the American Mathematics Association for his important contributions in Fourier analysis, complex analysis, quasi-conformal mapping and dynamic systems. From his experience of office, it can be seen that this is a person with strong activity ability. The current status of the Journal of Mathematics is closely related to him.
Then there was Helmandel, who was studying the field of partial differentialism in which Lu Qiujian's current thesis belonged. He systematically established the local and overall theory of Fourier integral operators. He won the Fields Medal and the Wolf Medal, the highest awards in the mathematics community.
If it is a metaphor, the Journal of Mathematics is like Wang Chongyang's Quanzhen Sect. The founder of the school, Mita Levler, laid the foundation for factional development. The successors, Carlson and others, carried forward their own sects like the Seven Sons of Quanzhen.
The Mathematics Annual is like Shaolin. Although it is a little weak and Quanzhen is the only one at the moment, with Wiles, the invincible sweeping monk in the world, it is still the place that the mathematics department around the world yearns for.
The remaining "Journal of the American Mathematical Society" and "Inventions of Mathematics" in Germany are like Wudang and Ming Cult, which are also the top existences in the martial arts world, calling for the wind and rain in their respective fields.
Back at Butler Residence College, Lu Qiujian quickly assembled various accessories together, and after debugging, various software was installed. After everything was done, Lu Qiujian tested the speed of the computer and nodded with satisfaction. Although the computer he assembled looked inconspicuous, it was already comparable to some small machines in terms of function.
Next, without any rest, Lu Qiujian made his paper into an electronic version based on his previous preparations. When class was held on Monday, he could use the printed script to read it to Professor Goles and Professor Wiles, and then Professor Wiles helped him contribute.
