2080 [Investment in TSMC]

The day after coming to the United States, there was news and feedback.

First, Ye Zhiming called and told him that there was no chip design company in the UK called Arm, but there was a small company called acorn, which was founded by two experts from the University of Cambridge in the UK.

However, a CPU designed and launched in 1985 is called arm, and its full name is "aorn-risc-mahine". Risc is a streamlined instruction set, which is two completely different CPU design concepts from the cisc complex instruction set used by Intel.

Risc streamlines the instruction set, simplifies the computer instruction function as much as possible, and only retains simple functions of instructions, and other instructions are executed through subroutines. This reduces the average execution cycle of instructions, thereby increasing the computer's main frequency and effectively reducing the power consumption of the CPU.

Like the chips of the arm, the power consumption can be as low as 125 milliwatts. However, the power consumption of the Intel chips can be more than ten watts. One thousand milliwatts is equal to one watt, which is equal to the power consumption of Intel chips dozens of times that of the arm.

If it is a desktop computer or a server, this power consumption problem can be ignored. However, if it is a mobile device, it will be very cautious about power consumption. Therefore, arm is difficult to compete with Intel in terms of computers, but it is like a fish in the field of mobile devices.

When Xia Tian heard the introduction, he felt it was reliable and immediately instructed Ye Zhiming to invest in this company.

"Mr. Xia, that company is very small, with only twelve engineers, and its office is in the barn, which looks like a straw troupe. If we invest in it, wouldn't we throw the money into the water?" Ye Zhiming said in surprise when he heard this.

In order to obtain first-hand information for Xia Tian, he went to the company to inspect it. To be honest, acorn is really inconspicuous. It was founded by experts from Cambridge University, but it was actually a small workshop. He couldn't afford to rent an office building and had to work in a barn. He really couldn't imagine any decent inventions that such a company could make.

"What do you know!" Xia Tian scolded angrily when he saw him say this, "The dignified Apple company was founded in the garage. When HP and Sony were first founded, they were just a handicraft workshop. They were blinded by the eyes and were drifting away just after making some money. Do I need to transfer you back to Hong Kong and let you stay on the deserted island for another two years?"

When Ye Zhiming heard this, he begged for mercy and said, "Boss, I was wrong. I shouldn't be unrestrained and question your decision. I will do it as you told me and talk to them about the investment."

"Well, that's it. Remember to invest as much as possible." Xia Tian ordered him.

"Yes." Ye Zhiming nodded quickly.

Xia Tian hung up the phone immediately.

Acorn was founded by experts from Cambridge University and next to Cambridge University. Isn’t this equivalent to Silicon Valley in the United States? You should know that the reason why Silicon Valley is successful is that it is surrounded by thirteen universities, including Stanford University, Northwestern Polytechnic University, Santa Clara University, San Francisco University, Kinmen University, San Jose University and other well-known American institutions.

High-tech companies in Silicon Valley cooperate with universities to incubate industries and quickly convert scientific research results into commercial use. The elite talents of these universities directly enter Silicon Valley to work after graduation, adding countless vitality and creativity to it, and also making Silicon Valley more and more prosperous.

...

In addition to Ye Zhiming, Wang Xianzong also called Xia Tian and said that he had already talked with Zhang Zhongmou of TSMC.

Zhang Zhongmou welcomed Wang Xianzong's investment. In fact, it is not an exaggeration to say that Wang Xianzong's investment is "timely rain" for TSMC today.

Because TSMC has been in poor management for three years since its establishment, its business has been very slow.

In the 1980s, most chip manufacturers produced and sold themselves, and there were very few modern industrial situations. This is true for ibm, intelligence, amd, Philips, Texas Instruments, Motorola, etc.

It was not until the late 1990s that as chips became more and more widely used, in addition to computers, servers, communication equipment, video recorders, game consoles, vcd/dvd, and even refrigerators, color TVs, air conditioners, audio, etc., all were implanted into chips, causing a surge in demand for chips. TSMC received massive orders and finally rose.

So now, it is the most difficult time for TSMC to develop in the most difficult time. Therefore, Zhang Zhongmou is very happy to invest in Wang Xianzong, and it can even be said to be welcomed by him.

The biggest boss of TSMC is actually not Zhang Zhongmou but the Taiwan authorities, because it was founded by the Taiwan authorities for US$100 million. In addition, international electronics giant Philips also invested more than 20 million US dollars. In addition, private capital such as Formosa Plastics also invested more than 20 million US dollars. Together, it laid the capital foundation of TSMC.

However, because TSMC has not developed smoothly in recent years and has suffered serious losses, these shareholders have begun to regret it. Zhang Zhongmou lobbied them several times, hoping that they could supplement funds and introduce new equipment and new processes, but they all refused one by one. Therefore, now they heard that someone is willing to take over, and they are very happy to transfer the stock.

Finally, after some negotiations, Tianxia Technology acquired 68% of TSMC's shares for US$80 million, becoming the largest shareholder of TSMC.

In addition, in order to seek the development of TSMC, Tianxia Technology provided TSMC with a guaranteed loan of 100 million US dollars. Zhang Zhongmou used this money to introduce a new generation of production lines that he had long been coveted, which brought TSMC's production process to a new level and laid the foundation for its later rise.

Of course, this is all a story.

...

In addition to acquiring TSMC, Wang Xianzong also began to recruit programmers.

The most developed computer region in the world is undoubtedly Silicon Valley in the United States.

Wang Xianzong founded the Tianxia Technology Branch Laboratory here, and invited well-known American computer experts and programmers to join, and developed a new generation of operating systems based on Unix.

This work is also quite laborious, because now that computers are booming, everyone can see its value. Therefore, computer experts are all popular, and programmers are also popular. So it is really not easy to get together a group of people.

However, in the end, the new company was founded and was finally named Genius Laboratory by Xia Tian. There are a total of 30 staff members in the Genius Laboratory. Except for a professional manager, everyone else is scientific researchers.

This makes the company very geeky. After its establishment, I had the honor to visit it once in the summer, which really opened my eyes and felt like I had entered a garbage dump three hundred years later.
