Chapter 722: Complex Social Propositions

After all, public opinion cannot be completely biased towards criticizing Murphy. Hollywood movies have now developed to create a community of interests led by six major companies. It is not easy for the Catholic Church to directly interfere in Hollywood like the previous world.

If the Catholic Church recreates the moral scrutiny of Hollywood in the last century, it will undoubtedly be in line with the interests of this community of interests. This is also an important reason why many media take the initiative to defend or rule Murphy when he is attacked.

However, there are many people who have a good relationship with Murphy in Hollywood, and many people who don’t like him.

Many of the latter saw the current opportunity and jumped out and stepped on it.

Especially when "The City of Darkness" seems to be cursed, and various accidents occur frequently.

One weekend at the end of July, "The City of Darkness" suddenly caught fire during a large theater in Guadalajara, Mexico's second largest city. As firefighters arrived in time, more than 800 viewers were evacuated in a timely manner. Fortunately, the local fire department reported that no casualties were caused.

But this is not finished yet.

In the afternoon, Los Angeles police confirmed that they had arrested a man carrying a gun and knives in the theater and found a large number of weapons and ammunition in his residence.

According to the announcement released by the Los Angeles police, they found the abnormal man with a reminder from a theater manager. When conducting a cross-examination, they found a "Glock" pistol with bullets, two large-load magazines filled with bullets and four knives found in the military bag he was carrying.

This incident once again pushed "Dark City" to the forefront.

According to the news from lawyer Robert, Los Angeles police examined the man's background information and determined that he was a very avid Murphy movie fan. That night, he regarded the man as the number one suspect in the shooting case of the Chinese Grand Theater in Hollywood and the murder case in the park.

Even though the man strongly denied that these things were related to him.

"He has no evidence of being absent," Bill Roses said to Murphy on the phone. "When the shooting in the Hollywood Chinese Theatre occurred, he said he was alone at home, and the police found a large number of colored balls and magician posters at his home, some of which were marked with red 'x' on them."

Murphy was somewhat relieved when the suspect was caught. If the crazy guy who imitated the magician continued to commit the crime, perhaps Hollywood might be really interfered by external forces under the huge social and religious pressure.

But as the incident was revealed, the discussion of films about Hollywood once again became a topic of crazy hype among the media.

Driven by the various forces with their own intentions, the media once again put the topic of "Whether the movie should be reviewed and it gave birth to violence". As Robert Downey Jr. said before, this is not the first time that people have engaged in criminal acts because of movies or imitation of movies: criminal groups commit crimes in the form of "The Italian Mission", American youth John Hinckley assassinated Reagan for Judy Foster, and "Born Murderer" brings worshippers...

To this day, tragedy is no longer a simple murder, attack and explosion, but rather a challenge to the public order by creating public chaos. This ideological anti-civilization and anarchy tendency is about to emerge. Under the display of spectacular violence in Hollywood, imitating violence on the screen has become a gradual escalating normal. So, are the many elemental media, dissemination, audience, and epistemology involved in narratives all to blame?

The most intense discussion is whether the movie should be responsible for violent crimes?

“In today’s mass communication, violence is often entertained, overwhelmed and aestheticized, although there is still no sufficient evidence to prove that violent footage on movies or TV is associated with violent tendencies.”

Not only Murphy will look for experts, but also the Catholic Church, Dr. Michael Wynnar, a renowned psychiatrist in the United States, said in an interview, "But it is certain that a person is ready to commit crimes. When watching these movies, he may be affected by the movies and push the crime sentiment to a critical point, leading to atrocities."

Not only experts, but some Hollywood insiders who had conflicts with Murphy before also stood up.

Harvey Weinstein said seriously in an interview: movie people should sit down and review the impact of violence in Hollywood movies on people, and the role Murphy Stanton plays in it!

Famous movie star Leonardo DiCaprio supported this view: "Our films are surrounded by blood and violence, and Hollywood and some directors like Murphy Stanton should pay for it."

Similarly, many people have come forward to support Murphy. Jessica Alba, who has worked with Murphy many times, said that the innocent movie "Dark City" was just a baptism of a coincidence and tragedy.

As the Oscar winner, Charlize Theron also mentioned this in an interview: "Don't blame Murphy and his movies, criminals always grab something at will to defend their distorted behavior."

Some relevant psychologists defended Murphy: "A young man watched a violent movie and felt cool and killed someone. This statement does not hold true, and the motive for crime is insufficient. Something must have happened in his life that prompted him to commit crimes, but we don't know yet."

So, should movies be responsible for violent crimes? Should movies really be criticized in this way? This is undoubtedly a very, very complex social proposition. Violent aesthetics is often inseparable from creation, style and excitement.

This difficult problem, this unbalanced situation, is actually like all the paradoxes in the world that are hard to come to conclusions.

Some people also view these things from a relatively fair standpoint.

For example, when Steven Spielberg was asked about his views on these things by reporters, he said, "I can only say that movies are the carriers for artistic presentation and reflection of people's hearts. Many directors are more keen to use villains and violence to express their views on the world. This is not wrong, and it is even a double reflection: The magician of "Dark City" resonates with his crazy thinking. His crazy doubts about the crowd, the judiciary, the system, the rule, and the environment have largely expressed the anger and anxiety of the entire era, so it has far-reaching influence, excitement, and more imitation. But because of this, Chris Dane's persistence in justice and the maintenance of life are more valuable. This is another message conveyed by the movie. Perhaps, some ordinary people desire to become magicians of destruction and doubt, but I believe that more people hope to become real night walkers."

The New York Times has issued a special additional publication for this purpose, just like treating serious political news to discuss this topic.

"Often it only happens after tragic events and the most important move to protecting civilization will happen after innocent civilians die. The real hero is neither a policeman nor a politician, nor a fictional movie character, but an ordinary citizen."

"So, whether it is in Columbine, Lower Manhattan, or now Aurora, Colorado, or even New Orleans after the flood, each of us is supporting each other through the deep valley shrouded in death. Outside the screen, before the tragedy, they ensured that the magician and the murderer could only achieve temporary victory in this world... and this will be the most important thing this popular movie, this violence, this major tragedy tells people."

In the Wave Manor, Murphy put down the Los Angeles Times and asked Gal Gadot, who was sitting opposite him slowly tasting tea, "What did Bill just call and say?"

"Some latest news about the suspect arrested by the Los Angeles police." Gal Gadot put down the teacup in his hand and said, "The suspect himself argued that he was very scared after seeing the shooting at the China Grand Theater in Hollywood, worried that someone would imitate crimes in the theater near him, but he wanted to watch a movie. So he made a difficult decision to bring a Glock pistol and a few knives to the theater, and even if someone came, he would be afraid."

She shrugged, "Then, he was arrested because he had always been alone and could not find any witnesses to prove his innocence."

"Will he be the murderer?" Murphy frowned, "Why don't I feel like it?"

"Think?" Gal Gadot shook his head, "You are not a policeman and have not actually participated in the investigation, so it feels unreliable."

"Yeah." Murphy nodded, "I hope he is the murderer."

If the murderer is still outside, he may continue to commit the crime, and then the pressure he and "Dark City" will be even greater.

Although I am not afraid of pressure, no one wants to stand at the forefront of public opinion.

And as things have developed to the present, the North American box office of "Dark City" has been seriously affected. Since it exceeded the $700 million mark, the number of daily growth can only be said to be better than nothing.

"We'll go see Cara in the afternoon." Murphy stood up, "that's what the box office is, let's discuss the awards season."

At the same time, a reporter from Columbia TV rushed to the small office building in the Santa Monica Beach area. With the assistance of church staff, a producer directed the crew members to transport the equipment used for live broadcasts to a large conference room in the building.

Tonight, Archbishop Marquez Costello of the Central South Diocese of California is preparing to accept an exclusive interview with the TV.
