Chapter 29 New Models (Part 2)
Hoffman also saw the improved me-3 model which Dr. Messer-chmitt gave him. According to the design indicators, the cargo volume of this improved fat aircraft will exceed 19 tons, with a maximum speed of more than 340 kilometers per hour, and a maximum range of 1,800 kilometers (at full load). Due to the appearance, the main technical indicators and performance have undergone a complete change with the prototype. The Ministry of Military Affairs gave the me-4 a new number. Faced with this aircraft that has not even been conducted in the complete test flight, the Air Force requested 50 aircraft in one breath. It’s not that they don’t want to ask for more, but that they think it’s really expensive. It is estimated that the price of a single unit will be as high as 1.4 million Empire Marks, and 50 units will be 70 million without a b-109 mark, and the price of the newly produced b-219 is only 140,000 marks. Moreover, the 1.4 million is just an estimated aircraft. According to consistent experience, the price is only high or not when it is actually offline.
But for Junkers, another 450 engines were obtained (300 commonly used + 150 backup). In this way, the ju-87 was forced to stop production because it was stolen by the he-218, and even the ju-211j engine was finally stopped. Yumo Company can make full use of the ju-213 series engine, and with the upcoming ju-004 series production, they seemed to see a lot of money waving to themselves.
After several new aircraft selection and competition, a consortium has been formed between various aircraft and engine manufacturers. Messerschmitt, including me-4 and me-262, has selected Yumo products, while Wolf has selected BMW and Mercedes-Benz series engines.
What should I do when facing the close-fitting pressing of the JuTun-213 series, the replaced BM801 series engine? Or expand the production!
At present, the -190 is the largest aircraft in the single model in service. The monthly output exceeded 800 in January, and it is expected to exceed 1,200 after the peak in March. Faced with such strong demand, coupled with the demand above the ju-98, BM has been exhausted (each aircraft is calculated as 1.5 engines), and naturally ignores Yumo's behavior of grabbing business. In fact, Wolf, which produces the -190, was also surprised by the orders placed by the Ministry of Arms. They calculated that under the current combat losses ratio, the Air Force does not actually need so many -190s. Even after June, the newly completed -190 will be more than the newly graduated pilots. Although this group of pilots has been greatly expanded, it includes all models.
However, Sperer's idea is simple and rough: he produces enough inventory and directly stops production on the entire line by September to switch to new fighter jets. This idea has received strong support from Hoffman.
After two aviation armament reorganization cases, Wolf, Messerchmidt, Henkel and Junckers were all very satisfied, but some companies had a poor life. Take Donier as an example. The company's do-17do-217 bomber has been discontinued. The front and rear twin-propeller-powered high-speed fighter Do-335, which has been carefully researched, was sentenced to death by the Ministry of Military Affairs. For a time, they could only rely on OEM ju-88 to maintain their business, and the ju-88 itself was
Facing the transformation of production, although the Ministry of Military Affairs has clearly stated that it would hand over the Italian SM79 bomber to Donier Company for production, the authorized models of others made the arrogant Mr. Claude Donier very dissatisfied. Donier Company also considered developing the do-417 heavy bomber based on the do-217 medium bomber, but whether it is technical reserves or the competitive pressure of other companies, it indicates that the project has no future, so it quickly gave up.
In such a lost situation, Donier got an opportunity that was not an opportunity: Japan brought four different design drawings of new naval aircraft, among which the high-speed carrier-based reconnaissance aircraft (Caiyun) had been assigned to Aladdo in advance. The remaining three models, one is a carrier-based fighter (Liefeng). Messer-Schmitt and Wolf are both struggling to compete, especially when they heard that this aircraft is the most successful Japanese aircraft designer, Jiro Horikoshi, and the two companies did not give in; the other is a carrier-based joint attack aircraft (Meteor), which is said to be both dive bombing and fish attack.
Functions, Henkel and Junckers competed against each other in a tit-for-tat battle. Everyone understood that whoever won this model means that in the future, anyone who took the model would be able to grasp the only model of a carrier-based attack aircraft; the third model is a land-based fighter (Purple Electric), but the Sichuan-Xiang company that developed this model is from a seaplane manufacturing company, and its technical strength is relatively weak in Japan. Considering that Germany has two land-based fighter projects that are very close to success, everyone is not optimistic about the Purple Electric project, so no major companies are interested in it.
When sending technical experts to Germany for exchange and study, the western Sichuan company, which thought it had a poor foundation, was the most active and modest. Most of the first batch of personnel were designers and engineers from western Sichuan. Faced with this embarrassing situation, Mr. Donier keenly noticed the unique advantages of the Zip Electric Project and immediately issued a project application to relieve the military department. In order to compensate Donier, Sperer immediately strengthened the technical team led by Giuseppe Gabrielli, chief designer of the Italian Fiat Company (they developed the g-50g-55 fighter)
So, in late January, the first Axis United Aviation Design Bureau was established first, code-named DK Design Bureau, taking the first letters of the three companies, Neil, Fiat and western Sichuan. In order to strive for first-class and give those big-name companies a little color, the designers of the Three Kingdoms decided to prepare the Purple Electric Project. When several other aircraft models were still reviewing the drawings step by step and considering the overall indicators and goals, the DK Design Bureau had held three meetings on the Purple Electric Project. It was difficult for such a complex team to communicate. Fortunately, the designers of the Three Kingdoms could speak some English, so English became a daily communication term. The design bureau's goal was very clear. This aircraft not only had to become an excellent medium and low-altitude fighter, but also had the function of boarding the ship to achieve sea and land.
Mr. Donier admires Japan's original design. The design boldly adopts the laminar airfoil and automatic air-retracting and air-retracting flaps that have not been fully promoted in the world. Especially the latter, it can use the less complex mechanism to achieve the corresponding optimal flap deflection angle and lift-drag ratio at various speeds. The project also uses rod force regulators to make the aircraft have good steering force and rudder effect at all speeds. The b-109 operates the rod very heavy in high-speed flight, and is called "slate in the air". This is one of the reasons why excellent pilots prefer the -190.
The new designs used on Zidian are very bold, far beyond the conventional ideas of German designers, but this just fits Donier's own philosophy, otherwise he would not dare to try strange shapes such as front and rear twin-propeller aircraft, so he believes that these designs should not only not be modified, but should be optimized and improved as much as possible.
Another problem with the project selection is the engine. The original design uses a 2,000 horsepower Yu engine. Considering that the liquid-cooled engines of the DB series and Jut series have been booked, it is estimated that it will be difficult to get it. In addition, if you want to get on the ship, it is best to use an air-cooled engine for the principle of maintenance convenience. However, in the specific selection, Dornier went against the opposition and decided to use the latest 901 series engine produced by BM.
This has been carefully considered. BM's most mature product is undoubtedly the 801 series. This double-row 14-cylinder star engine has been developed into the e-model after absorbing the relevant technologies of Japan's Mars engine (this is the new model of the -190a and ju-98 standard engines). It has 2,000 horsepower and also has a weight loss of 54 kilograms (although the Mars engine of the same power is lighter, but the cross-section is larger and the stability is not good). The next step is to develop the 801 model, and the horsepower is expected to reach 2,400 horsepower. The 901 series is based on Huo
Fman's request was to imitate the double-row 18-cylinder air-cooled star engine formed on the basis of imitating the Pratt & Whitney Double Hornets R-2800 in the United States (BM engine technology was developed based on the introduction of Pratt & Whitney Technology, so it is not particularly difficult to imitate). In addition, he obtained the Japanese engine technology (which is also a product of Pratt & Whitney Double-row 18-cylinder) drawings for reference. The 901 series produced also reached 2,000 horsepower (the best production version of the r-2800 at this time is 00-2400 horsepower).
But the 901 series is not outstanding at present. It has the same power as the 801 series and is thicker in cross-section, which will bring more resistance. Faced with doubts, Donier still insists on using the 901 series. He said: "The 14-cylinder engine is now 2,000 horsepower, maybe 2,400 horsepower in a year, and the 18-cylinder engine is now 2,000, and maybe it can reach 2,400 in a few months. The numbers are the same now, can we say that the future development space and potential are the same? If they are the same, what are the 18-cylinder 4 more cylinders than the 14-cylinder? "
Since we have to strive for the first place, we cannot follow the steps. According to his suggestion, the DK Design Bureau finally put the bet on the maturity of the BM901 model, and the backup engine was selected as the 2,100 horsepower of the Yu series.
Since this is the first joint development project with staff in place, Hoffman attached great importance to it and took time to listen to reports from several DK designers. (To be continued.)
