f-15s/mtd is an advanced technology verification aircraft for the F-15 short-range take-off and improved maneuverability developed by McDonald Douglas for the U.S. Air Force Wright Aviation Institute in 1984. The verification aircraft is actually to verify advanced aviation technology. This verification aircraft is mainly used to verify four technologies: binary thrust steering/reverse thrust nozzle, comprehensive flight/propulsion control, uneven/soft field short-range take-off landing gear and advanced man/machine interface.

Judging from these projects, this technical verification machine modified from the f-15b will have excellent maneuverability, and this maneuverability is obtained from the canard in the front and the vector engine in the back!

Full-move horizontal front wings are installed at the walls of the intake passages on both sides of the verification machine. This horizontal front wing is not newly developed, but is improved by the f/a-18a horizontal tail wing. Moreover, an upward angle of 20 degrees is added to facilitate the pitch and rolling moments of the same direction or differential deflection.

At the same time, the f-100 engine at the tail of the aircraft has also been improved. A rectangular binary steering nozzle with carbon fiber composite material is installed, which can deflect the engine thrust up and down relative to the aircraft's longitudinal axis, with a maximum deflection angle of up to 20 degrees, improving the aircraft's takeoff performance and maneuverable flight performance. Moreover, the thrust reverse blades in the nozzle can reverse the thrust, realizing emergency deceleration during flight and short-range landing and running, which is similar to the principle of a passenger aircraft.

In order to control these extra control systems, the original hydraulic operation of the f-15 can no longer accurately control so many systems. Therefore, this fighter also introduced a digital fly-by-wire control system to realize comprehensive flight/propulsion control, allowing the aircraft to change its thrust without changing its original flight trajectory and realize all flight parameter control.

Originally, the maneuverability of the F-15 fighter has become first-class among the third-generation aircraft with its powerful engine, and after adopting these measures, the maneuverability has become even better!

In history, these improvements were almost completed in 1988, and repeated test flights were conducted between 1989 and 1991. However, now, under the stimulation of the Soviet Union, the United States has to accelerate the development of new fighter jets.
