Chapter 51 It's Not Over
Louis articulately stopped Brett from interrupting Auerbach's speech.
He nodded to Auerbach, and the bishop adjusted his mood and continued to speak.
"Ralph, I know what you and your family are worried about." Auerbach's voice was soft, and Louis had never heard him say to himself like this. "You are too young, physically and mentally, not enough to deal with the adult world."
Auerbach quoted classics, making his words more convincing.
"Will entering the league at a young age really affect your development? I will introduce you to three players. Moses Malone, Daryl Dawkins, and Bill Willoughby PF/C. They entered the NBA without even going to college. Moses grew up as a MVP player. Daryl is a very good inside player. Although Bill is not developing well, this is professional sports. Everyone's development path is different. Even those who have been in college for four years, many people cannot adapt to the NBA."
"I'm giving this example to tell you that age will not affect your performance in the NBA, only the environment will affect you."
Auerbach is finally about to talk about his point.
"There's one thing Professor Brett said just now is right." Auerbach looked at Sampson. "Ralph, if you participate in the draft this year, we will get you, and you will be on the bench in the new season because you are not strong enough, and we have to be responsible for your future. But you can learn skills around a group of experienced veterans, master the tricks of rebounding and blocking, participate in high-intensity playoffs, and participate in your favorite fast break on a great team. From the lineup, I don't think there is a second team that can create a fertile ground that is more suitable for your growth."
Auerbach is going to take out his king.
"You will become our core center and the pillar of building the team. You will get the same team status as Larry Bird, and we will provide you with the same salary as Larry. What you get is not only the opportunity to become a millionaire, but also the easiest core player growth opportunity in NBA history."
Louis saw the heart-warming in Sampson's face.
Sampson's mother, Sarah Sampson, asked: "What is Larry Bird's salary?"
"The first year was $650,000." Auerbach did not believe that any middle-aged American family could easily reject this income.
Old Sampson looked puzzled, he knew that Auerbach provided an environment that was hard to refuse, salary, and future.
He said: "Mr. Auerbach, please wait, we need to discuss it."
"Of course." This is a big deal, Auerbach understands.
What Auerbach couldn't understand was that Jeremy Brett, who was also involved in their family meeting. Isn't he an outsider of the Sampson family? How could he participate in the decision-making of this matter?
Also, Terry Holland joined in.
"It's over," Auerbach said in frustration.
Louis didn't know why he was frustrated, "Don't they have made a decision yet?"
"The two most knowledgeable and knowledgeable people among those who don't like Ralph leaving campus the most. If they have the right to advise in this family meeting, do you think they would suggest Ralph join the professional league now?"
What Auerbach refers to is Holland and Brett.
Brett is a law professor at the University of Virginia, so he will naturally help the team persuade Sampson to persuade him.
Sampson is the guarantee of Holland's performance in the new season, and his attitude towards this matter is also predictable.
"Maybe, but this is Ralph's own business, why should they decide?" Louis asked.
Auerbach sarcastically said: "He is obviously a good boy."
A few minutes later, the Sampsons, and Holland and Brett returned to Auerbach, before Louis.
"Have you decided?" Auerbach knew his plan A was about to fail.
"Sorry, Mr. Auerbach," said Sampson, "We decided to let Ralph continue his career. It was not an easy decision. Our whole family could see your sincerity, but Ralph didn't want to leave school yet."
Auerbach was deeply in love with Sampson. At this point, he wanted to turn the tables. "I want to know, why?"
"Because with Ralph's talent, he can thrive on any team. He doesn't need to leave school early or play a substitute in Boston. Don't forget how infamous your racism is, and few African Americans are willing to play there!" Brett smiled. "Is this answer clear enough?"
Sampson did not speak out throughout the whole meeting.
Louis was paying attention to him, and there was nothing to analyze on his face. The most exposed part of his emotions throughout the whole process was when Auerbach weaved the future for him.
Auerbach described a bright future for him.
Unfortunately, his ears are too soft and he has no idea about his future.
"Okay, goodbye." Auerbach turned around regretfully.
Holland kept up with them.
When they came outside Sampson's house, Auerbach was thunderous at Holland: "I'll just say it! This family will not sleep at night for today's decision in the future! They don't know what they are doing! If the child is in a car accident, he will be finished! If he is determined to be a doctor, I will certainly let him finish four years of college, but he is not that material! He was fooled by the group of idiots around him who only know how to flatter him!"
Holland had his own position, and he could only smile bitterly.
Auerbach called a taxi to go to the airport and flew directly back to Boston.
The car left for a while before Louis asked the driver to stop.
"What are you doing?" Auerbach was furious.
Louis laughed and said, "I don't think this is over yet."
"You still want to use your smile to get their fists?" Auerbach snorted, "Save it!"
"Do you really want Ralph?"
"Thinking day and night."
Louis opened the car door, "Then I will fight for you one last time."
"It's up to you!"
"By the way, this matter is a matter of business?"
Auerbach's eyes twitched, "Of course."
"Since it's business, there should be funding." Louis stretched out his hand in front of the driver, "Can you take the initiative, Reed! Don't always embarrass me..."
Awkward?
Auerbach's mouth twitched in anger. It's been more than a year since he realized today that Louis' grandson would be embarrassed.
"You're fucking finished and come to me for reimbursement!" Auerbach closed the door fiercely and ordered the driver to drive quickly.
Louis stood by the roadside and called another taxi.
Since the 1980s, it has become increasingly difficult to ride a ride.
The new generation of young people didn't eat this set, and Louis rushed to call a taxi, "Go to Jesse Quick Lunch."
Yesterday, Louis and Jeff Lamp had a conversation and learned that Sampson liked to eat at Jesse Express Restaurant in Harrisonburg.
He wasn't sure if Sampson would come today, he just wanted to try his luck.
Louis didn't want to persuade him in front of Sampson's family, he had to create a one-on-one environment.
Because, in terms of physiological structure, he and Sampson are both young people.
Moreover, Sampson, like him, was born in 1960. He was almost 20 years old and finished his freshman year.
If it is 40 years later, older students like him will choose to skip the grade in high school to enter the NCAA early. However, there is no such atmosphere of rushing to enter the professional league at this time, so they do not value age.
Louis ordered a normal hot dog roll.
I ordered a cup of Coke.
He hopes that after Sampson sends off the most important noble person in his life, he will want to relax in the restaurant he often comes to.
"Are you waiting for someone?"
The waiter saw that Louis did not check out immediately after finishing his meal, and was always watching the door.
"Well, I don't know if he will come."
"Are you a regular customer here?"
Louis suddenly thought that the waiter should know when Sampson usually comes to eat.
"It should be," said Louis, "Do you know Ralph Sampson?"
The waiter smiled and said, "Their family is well known to everyone in Harrisonburg!"
"When will Ralph usually come?"
"You might have to wait a little longer, Ralph always comes over when it's late at night."
Louis likes hot dogs here, just like eating dumplings only likes dumpling stuffing.
So he ordered two hot dog rolls, but he cut them down each one.
He waited for a long time, about a few hours.
When he was about to think of it, Sampson appeared.
He is 2.24 meters tall and is very conspicuous no matter where he is, not to mention his scary limbs.
"Thank you, thank you!" Sampson said politely to the waiter.
"Slow down, Ralph, don't you know anyone has been waiting for you here for hours?" The waiter glanced at Louis, who was so calm.
Sampson looked over and locked in Louis at a glance.
