Chapter 4 Refugees
In this world, swearing can only comfort others, but it cannot make people feel at ease. Even for a bachelor, the prophet's promise is like a cloud, light and will dissipate when blown by the wind.
Therefore, the village chief and the pastor were half-believing and half-doubting about Evilla's assurance.
Leo swept their faces, and if nothing unexpected happened, they were two frightened faces. The old wrinkles appeared on their fragile souls that were tortured by rumors and fear. Their eyes were turbid and confused. They were really old, and the alchemist realized deeply.
"I still can't let it go," said the priest, struggling, "That monster... I'm afraid even you can't resist it."
"You alone are afraid that it's even worse." Li Ou pointed out cruelly.
Evila glanced at Leo with complaint. "If it's true as you said, then even if the door is closed, it will not be able to stop him."
The village chief subconsciously looked at the main entrance of the village, but the thick and cold walls blocked his sight. Only the sound of the whirlpools rolled up by the cold wind slapped the doors and windows echoed in the church. He was like a frightened bird, even any movement was enough to make him panic. He turned to Evila in fear and said tremblingly, "But... we have no other way."
“We are here.”
The village chief and the pastor looked at each other and did not express their opinions for a long time.
Leo was fed up with their distrust and the barriers revealed in their words. Every move of defense and every look of dodging seemed to regard them as the fierce and cruel ghost in their mouths.
"I have a way to make you work once and for all."
This is more to their liking, but even their requests seem insincere.
The village chief asked without any urgent question, "What are you going to do?" His expression and tone looked more perfunctory.
The alchemist sneered indifferently, "The best way is to pray to Ms. Andal, priest." He stood up and looked up at the cold and ruthless god. Her eyes were hollow and there was no trace of divineness on her face: she was like a stone--no, she was just a cold stone herself. "Pray that she could give you the uninvasive protection of all evil, and pray that she could dispel darkness with light. Of course, what you should pray most is that the other party would not come..."
"Get out of here, alchemist! Get out of here!" the priest suddenly shouted angrily. Somehow, Leo's words seemed to hurt the wound of his left leg amputated. "You don't believe her! It's not your turn to instruct me what to do." He waved his crutch emotionally, as if it was the holy weapon in Andal's hand.
The village chief also had anger. "You should go and rest, honorable guests!" he said gritting his teeth.
Leo shrugged indifferently. He just couldn't ask for it.
"Let's go, Evila, I think the first thing we need to guarantee now is a full meal and plenty of sleep." He grabbed Evila's arm and gave her a warm smile. "Otherwise, I'm afraid I'll have no strength to even speak."
Evila sighed helplessly and was started by Leola.
"Sorry, Mr. Pastor. Can you pray for me if possible?" She saluted the pastor seriously, as if she was apologizing for Leo. "May the holy lady dispel the fear in your heart."
The pastor stared at Li Ou angrily and expressed his refusal. "I'm afraid I can't do it."
Leo was about to respond, but a burst of pain came from his arm. Evilla pinched his arm and stopped him desperately. "Then... I will come to pray tomorrow morning..." she said in a whisper.
"...You can come alone, and your friend, don't have to." The pastor agreed to her request unhappily. "I am worried that the air and dust here, what we exhaled will defile his 'truth'."
When I walked out of the church, it was completely dark.
It was another night without moons and stars. It was pitch black all around, and only the dim lights that emerged from the houses on both sides of the muddy road illuminated the road for them.
Leo and Evila walked in the mud mixed with ice, moving in a crooked and clumsy manner. We looked like two clowns. He was glad that they were ragged and there were no peeping eyes hidden in the darkness around. In this regard, even the road was muddy.
Turning a corner, Evila couldn't help it. "Why did you say that?" she accused him.
“Which?”
"You know in your heart." She was full of resentment. "The incident you deliberately provoked."
Why was she unwilling to forgive her? Leo felt inexplicably confused. Could it be that she still wanted to do good things to the end and wait for the so-called "demons and ghosts" here? What if the other party never came here? They would have to live here forever? What a joke. He is not a stupid good man, nor is he a demon hunter. He would not be trapped just for a few words. What's more, they have no kindness and no sincerity.
"They don't trust you and me. Do I want to use my hot face to put on my cold butt?" He snorted disdainfully. "Evila, we are just travelers and passers-by. We have to leave after resting for several nights, and then regain our energy."
"I know. But..."
“…but what?”
“There’s something wrong here.”
"I didn't see it." Li Ou sneered, "I only heard their imagination."
Evilla stopped and looked at him with a serious expression. "Not a fantasy." She said solemnly, "It is close to the Kingdom Capital and the Desperate Fort. Logically, the Guards should have patroled the place: several villages have been reduced to the graves of the dead. This is enough for them to send elite troops. The King of Cratim is not the tyrant of the county of Siris."
"That's just a rumor."
"Where are those ruins? What about the ruins? That can't be fake."
Leo yawned and barely responded to Evilla's chattering evidence and questions. He felt that his thoughts could no longer keep up with the rhythm of her speech. He lowered his head and responded vaguely: "Didn't they say that heavy snow blocked the road?"
"Even so," he felt Evilla's voice seemed to come from a very distant place, hazy, gentle and warm, like a lullaby hummed in his mother's mouth. "...the mountains cannot stop the griffin knight."
Griffon Knight? The group of chirping and noisy birdmen?
Leo pushed open the hotel door, and the warmth of the bright fire came to his face, and the continuous sleepiness surrounded him tightly. "Maybe tomorrow will be here?" He didn't want to talk about these things anymore, at least today. "Let me go to bed, Evila, I'm about to fall asleep." He forced himself to say that, and then he was already lying on the bed covered with a thick meadow. The stove was emitting heat, and Lu Yuewu's appearance became blurry and faint, and her inquiries became farther and farther away. I must be exhausted. Such thoughts appeared in his mind, and then he fell asleep completely.
It was already the next day when he was awakened by the noise outside the hotel.
Li Ou tried hard to open his eyes. The room was empty, the stove had already gone out, and the bitter mountain wind kept pouring in from the windows that exposed a gap, bringing the biting coldness of despair on the snow-cold mountains.
The louder and louder outside was like a beating gong urging him to get up. He was very upset and wanted to curse and plug their mouths with snowballs. But when he looked out the window - the scenery in front of him made him temporarily forget all his discomfort. The village was built on the slope at the foot of the mountain, surrounded by mountains on three sides, and the only hotel here stood behind the mountain. The windows of the room faced the open tundra, and there was a flat river in front of him, and it seemed that he could see the plane of the sea at one glance.
But what he likes most is the beautiful mountain scenery on both sides.
The sun at noon flashed on the hills, forming colorful halos, just like the gods recorded in the classics when they appeared. The priest must be praying for this, right? Otherwise, they would be regarded as disrespectful. He thought contemptuously. The layers of snow-capped peaks were covered in fine mist, and the majestic rocks and ice made the tops on its shoulders look so small. A majestic cliff was covered with crystal clear ice, and the icicles at twenty feet were like a frozen waterfall roaring silently. A falcon hovered on the edge of the cliff, spreading its blue wings, and soaring in the clear sky.
However, even the eagle seemed to hear the noisy sound of ants on the ground, and flapped its wings without any nostalgia and disappeared behind the mountains. He could not continue to endure in silence.
Li Ou put on his coat and walked out of the bed barefoot. The stones under his feet were cold. He put his hands on the windowsill and looked down.
The villagers had already gotten up, and smoke came out of cooking fires on the roofs of each family, but this was such a precious peace and peace as precious as a treasure and was broken by another group of travelers. They were clamoring at the door of the hotel, chatting like long-tongued women. The militia pushed away the onlookers and squeezed into the crowd, but were rudely pushed by outsiders.
The alchemist stretched his neck and looked around, but the back of his head blocked his entire view. He didn't understand where so many people came from such a remote village. It was getting more and more trouble outside, as if he was about to fight. He quickly put on his boots.
"Mr. Feifedo!" he shouted at the door.
For the Ravens, they are familiar with this place. Although they wear masks, the people here seem to be no longer surprised. Therefore, it is better for them to be responsible for protecting the safety of the ladies and ladies.
"Mr. Li Ou," the leader of the Crow Tribe poked his head out of the stairs, "I'm here."
He seemed to be guarding there. Leo walked over while buttoning the buttons on his coat. "What happened outside?" he asked, "It's too noisy."
Fei Feiduo glanced at the door and told him in a low voice, "It's a group of refugees." His mask blocked everything, and Li Ou never saw anything from the cold mask. "The militia let them in."
"Huh? Why didn't they stop these guys this time?" Li Ou mocked.
“It is said that some of them know.”
"Why will the noise start?" he said as he looked out, "Let's go and have a look."
"Because the hotel owner found that there was a dead person among them..." Before he could finish speaking, the alchemist who had entered the crowd had already seen the source of the noise - a poor worm with his eyes closed, his face pale and covered in blood.
