Chapter Thirteen: Order is Beauty

As for movies, many movie screenwriters only earn fame but not money.

There are a large number of people known as "gunners" lurking in the industry. Most of them are students who have not graduated from film and television majors, writing scripts for some well-known screenwriters. Production companies generally offer a price of 1,000 yuan per episode to these "gunners", but their works will not sign their names. Although this price is already a lot for "newcomers", because it is a "blind-box operation", their rights and interests are usually not guaranteed, and it is not easy to get the royalties.

Before "work starts", screenwriters will collect deposits first, and the deposits collected by different screenwriters account for different proportions of the total remuneration: for big names and acquaintances, you can get 50% of the deposit in the early stage; but most screenwriters can only get 30%, or even 10% lower.

The more detailed the time limit for paying screenwriters' remuneration, the more initiative the screenwriters are in every link, the greater the possibility that screenwriters will be "explore" at any time. Moreover, compared to the big stars who often pay hundreds of thousands of dollars, the return on screenwriters' intellectual investment seems a bit meager in any case. For immature scripts or screenwriters who are not "fashioned", investors may withdraw or discard scripts at any time.

There is no screenwriter association in China, nor does it regulate relevant laws, and the protection of intellectual property rights is weak, so there are frequent incidents of arrears, denied remuneration, and plagiarism of scripts. If you are not famous, just wait to be exploited.

Most American screenwriters are affiliated with the Screenwriters Association.

And they are very united.

Chen Tiandu had previously needed to submit a brief script for "Save Soldier Ryan" to enter the script library for filing, and also paid a membership fee and registered a membership with the Screenwriter Association. His mobile phone is connected to the global networking and its functions are really powerful. Registering a member does not require American nationality, and it is still very easy.

Doing this can also prevent some similar scripts from appearing and avoid copyright disputes. When signing contracts with large companies, there are associations to support them, which is very helpful for outsiders like Chen Tiandu.

A current contract from the American Screenwriters Association will expire in 2007.

According to this contract, the minimum royalties for original scripts by six major film companies is $106,000, and the price offered by major TV networks for TV dramas is about $21,000 for prime time comedy and $31,000 for prime time dramas. Many screenwriters earn much more than that.

The scripts produced by major film companies cost at least $1 million, while well-known screenwriters may get $4 million per movie. According to data from the American Film and Television Producers Alliance, the average annual income of Hollywood screenwriters is $200,000. This is already high compared to the average annual income of Los Angeles residents and most Americans.

Such good conditions are enough to make domestic colleagues commit suicide by hitting tofu.

However, things are relative.

If the income of American screenwriters is compared with actors, directors and film and television company managers, screenwriters will feel unbalanced and then have the mentality of a large salary increase. This is also the direct reason why the screenwriters who shocked the entire North America several years later went on strike.

Screenwriter strike?

If this word is spread to China, many people may be blind and have no concerns. "Get out of the way when the strike is done. So many people are waiting to eat this bowl of rice, but they are afraid that they will not be able to find anyone." The word "strike" has no way to talk about. At most, they will leave themselves in shame and then be dominated by the script.

But in the United States, the Screenwriters Association is so arrogant. For the sake of overall interests, the screenwriters have to go on strike with the order of the association. The entire entertainment industry is in danger of paralysis, and even the Oscars may be shut down.

The next day, after waking up from the hotel arranged by the producer for him, he came directly to DreamWorks. The supervisor arranged by the Screenwriter Association and the contracted lawyer invited, which was his backing.

After waiting for more than an hour, I was almost impatient. Spielberg did not see it, but a middle-aged man suddenly appeared.

"Mr. Chen, my name is Robert Rodat. I am also a screenwriter. Can you ask you a few questions?"

"I'm very happy to see you, right?"

"Forgive me, you are a Chinese student, and you seem to be in your twenties. How can you write the story of the Normandy Landing of the American Army? And it is a story that takes saving American soldiers as the main line? Have you been to the United States before? Where did you learn American customs from? Have you believed in Christianity? How many years have you been? As far as I know, Chinese people basically don't have this belief, and not even know many of them. Your society and priests love their country very much, but you wrote a story about American soldiers loving the United States very much? Is there a prototype or a purely fabricated story? All this is very strange, and the strangest thing is that you are still so young. Please answer me."

The atmosphere in the room suddenly solidified. It was obviously a big dealer who bullied customers. The screenwriter's association staff member Maike hesitated for a moment, but still didn't speak.

Chen Tian shook his black charcoal-like eyebrows and smiled from beginning to end.

Robert Rodart? I said why is this name a little familiar? Isn’t this the original creator of the script of "Save Soldier Ryan"? Did Li Kui meet Li Gui? Then he denied this speculation.

His old god turned his head and looked at the young lawyer, "Secretary Donnie, do I have to answer various questions from the film company?"

"Depending on your mood, because the script has not been signed so far, you are the only owner of the script. Only after signing the contract can the producer ask the screenwriter to modify the script." Donnie said with a smile.

Robert immediately said angrily: "What do you mean? Do you dare not answer my question? Or is it that the script was not written by you at all."

Chen Tiandu also curled his smile, shook his finger and said, "Sir, you have the right to ask, and I have the right to choose whether to answer. If you suspect that my script is plagiarism, you can resort to legal means. As long as you can find a script similar to me from the Screenwriter Association to sue me, then you will win."

"As far as I know, Mr. Spielberg's new film plan was announced to the media in advance before I arrived in the United States. I was confused. I had just signed a buyout agreement online that was not legally effective. If I don't sign the contract now, how should they make a movie?"

Robert was stunned, wanting to get angry and have many concerns, his face turned red and he looked constipated. The two people who followed him at the scene also looked at Chen Tiandu in surprise. Unexpectedly, Chen Tiandu was a Chinese, and would treat him so toughly when he first arrived.

Chen Tiandu hadn't finished his words yet, "I'm very curious. What mentality and identity do you ask me so righteously. If you question me on behalf of DreamWorks, then I'm very embarrassed. I suddenly don't want to sell you the script I have worked hard to write. Let's declare the transaction broken, and I will refund the hotel accommodation fee as a whole. If you ask me in my personal name, then I don't want to talk to you. Let me guess what name you will choose in the end? The former is or the latter."

"You..." Robertton was there, as if he was greatly wronged and angry.

Chen Tiandu's face also turned cold, "I have been waiting for so long but no one has come. It seems that the big guys at DreamWorks are very busy today. Mr. Maike, it may be that the jet lag has not changed yet. I need to go back and rest for a few days. Please have a waste of time today. Let's come back again in the future?"

Maike is a staff member sent by the Screenwriters Association. In theory, he should be on Chen Tiandu's side. But this is just a theory.

Maike frowned and said unhappy: "Mr. Chen, your behavior is very bad. After all, we agreed to sign a contract today and we must be punctual. Punctuality is a necessary quality for a gentleman, right? Dreamworks is a big company, and changing time will be troublesome, and you have an agreement before."

"Huh~~"

Chen Tiandun suddenly laughed, "Lawyer Donnie, can I ask the association to change a staff member?"

Donnie looked at him in surprise and smiled, "Yes, sir. I am the lawyer you hired. If you need to maintain your reputation, you can also come to me. As long as you have money, even if the defendant is a screenwriter association and a dream factory, I can win the lawsuit."

"You are a good lawyer, and we will cooperate again." Chen Tiandu smiled and shook hands with him, put on his coat and walked straight out, "Money is power, power is order, order is beauty. I like this place!"

A panic shout suddenly came from behind.

Chen Tian really left, and he went to the bank to handle some personal affairs.

He was attacked by someone as soon as he came, but the Americans' methods were too rough and they couldn't learn them yet, so he wouldn't take this trick.

"It seems that the future is not easy to walk, and there are still many places to use money." A total of 168,000 US dollars, which is almost all his possessions.

This time I came to the United States to apply for a work visa, with the maximum stay time of no more than one year, but he still has a lot to do. If he can get half a green card, it will be much more convenient. Many people have misunderstandings about green cards. Getting a green card does not mean that they are Americans, it is just a permanent residence permit. In recent years, the immigration boom in China has caused a stir. The rich and powerful people are going abroad, and a green card is still very valuable.

"Oh, take one step at a time. If you go back like this, you will be ridiculed to death by Kong Yiji."

He didn't wander around Los Angeles, he really didn't have the interest. He wrote and painted in the hotel room, and time passed quickly.

Just as the night came, Toby Hawkins called.
