Chapter 26 The quagmire

Chapter 26 Mice Pond

Chapter 26 Mice Pond

I thought what was waiting for us in front would be a fierce battle, but I was wrong; I thought the enemy would not let us enter the encirclement so easily, but I was still wrong...

More than half an hour later, I felt that we were already in the encirclement. First, we saw several destroyed tanks on the road, including Vietnam and our army. At the beginning, we couldn't tell which tanks were from the Vietnamese army and which were from our army. After all, the tanks on both sides were Soviet tanks (our army's Type 56 main battle tanks imitated the Soviet T54, while the Vietnamese army equipped a large number of t54 and t55 provided by the Soviet Union), and the marks were similar, and there was a red five-pointed star on the turret. Only when we got closer did we find the difference between the two. The five-pointed star on our tanks had the two words "August 1" arranged up and down.

and……

There were four or five PLA soldiers hanging on our tanks without exception, saying that they were hanging... because they had all died.

In modern times, I heard that in order to prevent the infantry from being thrown off by the tank, some troops used backpacks to fix the soldiers on the tank. As a result, the infantry could not get out of the car in time when the tank was attacked, and almost became fish on the iron plate. I didn't believe this in the past, but now I have to believe it after seeing it with my own eyes.

The soldiers hanging on the tank couldn't rest their eyes until they died, and their posture was almost the same. They seemed to want to get off the tank hard, but a backpack strap tied their bodies tightly. Some of them only had their upper body or lower body, and the other half didn't know where they went long ago...

They have been dying for a while, and the temperature around them rises sharply as the sun shines, which accelerates the safety of these corpses. The unpleasant stench in the air quickly attracted flies, ants and some unknown insects crawling and biting on the faces, mouths, and wounds of the sacrificed soldiers...

The soldiers turned their faces and refused to watch this sad scene. A kind of desolation from the deepest part of their hearts permeated the front and back of the team.

"One row, three rows are on guard!" Seeing this scene, I ordered without thinking: "The second row is responsible for collecting the dead comrades! Be careful of mines!"

"Yes!" The soldiers responded and immediately dispersed and occupied the favorable terrain to prepare for battle. Li Shuibo took his soldiers to climb onto the tank and unraveled the bodies hanging on the tank. Battalion Commander Ding also consciously brought a few people to help.

"Company Commander!" The deputy company commander said with some concern: "Is this a trap set by the Vietnamese Japanese? Our top priority now is to contact the tank troops first, and it is not advisable to delay too long!"

"Yeah!" I nodded without saying a word.

Actually, what the deputy company commander said makes sense, but I had to do so. Although the soldiers didn't say anything when they saw the bodies that were not taken away, I knew what they were thinking. From another perspective, if we were the ones who died in battle, if the bodies hanging on the tank were ourselves, would they be as much as they are now, and the flies are bitten and no one is taking them away?

Chinese people believe that there will be souls after death, and that they can be reborn after drinking Mengbo Soup. If their souls see the body and corpse, the degree of desolation can be imagined.

If I ignore these corpses, it will undoubtedly hit the warriors' confidence to a great extent. The reason is very simple. When the warriors think that the corpses may be so tragic that they are like these sacrificed warriors, then none of them will want to die.

But...if I let them know that at any time and under any circumstances, I will not give up any corpse, then they will not have such concerns about "fate after death", and they can also use their lives and death on the battlefield!

Therefore, whether from personal perspective or from the combat effectiveness of the troops in the future, I must take these corpses away.

It should be said that the terrain here is suitable for the Vietnamese army to launch an attack on us. The path here merges into a highway, and it suddenly becomes spacious in front of us. In our eyes, we are crisscrossing farmlands and several dilapidated bamboo houses. There is no hidden secret around us except for a few small hills and thatched more than half a person tall. If the Vietnamese army launches a raid on us here, we seem to have to retreat to the dense forest behind us.

My sixth sense tells me that since we wiped out the two platoons of the Vietnamese army, several pairs of eyes have been staring at us in the forest. It can be said that the Vietnamese army is well aware of every move, and we don’t have many troops, only two companies. Even if we are prepared, I believe that if they want, they can still set up another ambush.

But for some reason, they did not take action, but unexpectedly put us in the encirclement...

"Woo..." At this time, a roar came from our air, and the soldiers lie down without waiting for my order. Several mortar shells exploded around us, causing hot steam and earth waves. Then the hometown people who were alert in the rear reported: "The Vietnamese are here, behind! Five hundred meters, two companies are riled!"

I leaned against a tank and raised my sniper rifle and looked back. Teams of Vietnamese troops flashed out in the dense forest not far away. But they did not mean to attack us, but walked slowly, as if... they wanted to drive us into the open ground...

"Tank!" At this time, Yang Songjian, who was responsible for alerting the front, shouted nervously: "Discover enemy tanks, two Type 56..."

"Bang bang..." The soldiers had not dealt with the tanks yet. At this time, when they saw these two big guys coming towards them, they were so nervous that they grabbed the weapons in their hands and fired them. But how could the rifles and submachine guns stop the tank? The bullets hit the tank and sounded like fried beans for a while and then ejected like mud.

I was shocked when I heard this. If I were attacked by the Vietnamese army at this time, it would be a bit embarrassing. I couldn't help but shout: "Mortar, four hundred fires... Get ready for explosive packs!"

I'm not sure if the mortar or the 40 bazooka can destroy modern tanks. After all, I know too little about tanks of this era. If they can't work, I can only wrap them in my arms with explosives.

But when we looked back, the two tanks seemed a little strange. It should be said that our army is not prepared for it now, and a considerable number of people have been exposed to their firepower, but they neither *** nor fired. There seemed to be a small red flag on the turret shaking at us. When we looked at the red five-star carefully, the two big words "August 1" were written.

So he hurriedly ordered to the intercom: "Cease-fire, it's our tank!"

"Is it our tank?" The soldiers raised their heads suspiciously, and after careful deciding, they finally confirmed that they were their own people, and then they let go of their hunger.

The tanks rumbled and drove towards us with full force. I don’t know whether they were demonstrating to us or to show their identity. Two shells were fired, and the Vietnamese troops in the distance fell to the ground one after another.

With dust all over the sky, the two tanks drove in front of them, and a warrior wearing a tank cap poked out from the turret and shouted at us: "What a name? I've been shooting at you all the time! I can't tell the difference between my own people and the enemy! Hurry up and hide behind the tank..."

We didn't dare to answer, so we took the soldiers to the back of the tank. When we walked behind, we found that there were still several soldiers lying on the tank. It seemed that they had just unpacked their backpacks. When we saw us, we jumped off the tank. Without saying anything, we hugged us and shouted, "Comrade! But it's time for you!"

"Hurry! Come with us..." One of the short and strong soldiers waved at us: "It's very dangerous here, leave here quickly!"

Under the cover of two tanks and the leadership of these soldiers, we ran along the road to the open ground for more than ten minutes. After turning two valleys, we arrived in front of a high ground with a height of only 100 meters. On the other side of the high ground was the river. On this side, there were more than 20 large and small tanks parked on the open ground to form a semicircle defense. There were large and small bullet craters everywhere, several incomplete tanks, and even one was smoking...

"Comrade!" When we walked into the tank's defense circle, a cadre wearing a tank hat and a slightly short figure came up to us, and shook hands with us enthusiastically and said, "Comrade, we're waiting for you! Which unit are you from?"

"I am the commander of the 5th Company, 2nd Battalion, 639th Regiment, 213th Division, 71st Army!" I replied, "My name is Cui Wei!"

"Hello, Captain Cui!"

"I am the battalion commander of the 1st Battalion of the 629th Regiment of the 210th Division of the 70th Army. My name is Ding Zhiping." Battalion Commander Ding also came up to introduce himself.

"Hello, Battalion Commander Ding!" The cadre was stunned when he heard our introduction. Obviously, he thought we should introduce it in the order of the official ranks, but we did the opposite. I really didn't consider this at that time.

"My name is Wu Changhui, and I am the battalion commander of the Second Tank Battalion of the 384th Regiment of the 128th Division of the 43rd Army!" As he said that, he looked around worriedly, almost pushing me to the direction of the high ground, and said as he walked: "Let's go inside and talk! It's not safe outside..."

I couldn't help but fainted when I heard this. If even the defense circle composed of this tank was not safe, I really couldn't think of any place that was safe!

"How did you come in?" As soon as we sat down in an anti-cannon hole in the high ground, Battalion Commander Wu asked in confusion.

I looked at Battalion Commander Ding and I answered helplessly: "We don't know either!"

"You don't know either?" Captain Wu was even more confused when he heard what I said: "How many people were there when you came?"

"There are three companies in total!" Battalion Commander Ding replied with hatred: "But he was attacked by the Vietnamese army on the road, with more than 100 casualties!"

"Only one company of casualties came in? Didn't the Vietnamese army stop you?" Battalion Chief Wu said with disbelief: "Do you know how many Vietnamese army is besieging us? They have two regiments in total! And they are two main regiments of the Third Division of the Vietnamese army. I also used various means to ask the prisoners. One was the 12th regiment that had won the title of "Heroic Regiment", and the other was the 141st regiment that had won the "Heroes of the People's Armed Forces". Both regiments are good at fighting tough battles. Can the troops of one of your battalions break through the encirclement and break in?"

Listening to Battalion Commander Wu's words, even Battalion Commander Ding felt a little confused. He had also seen the combat effectiveness of the Vietnamese army in the jungle, and the strength of the two platoons almost wiped out our entire army, not to mention that there were two regiments...

"They intended to let us in!" I replied.

Actually, I have had this guess from the beginning. Now, hearing what Captain Wu said, I have become more determined about my thoughts.

"I think so!" Captain Wu nodded thoughtfully: "But why? They can completely destroy you, why does it take so much trouble?"

I picked up a map in the corner of the wall, spread it out and looked at it, and said, "I think I know why the Vietnamese army let us in!"

"Why?" Battalion Commander Ding and Battalion Commander Wu couldn't help but turn their eyes to me.

"At the best of my knowledge, our army is attacking Tongdeng and Gaoping, right?" I pointed to the location of ours on the map.

Captain Ding's face was full of confusion, but Captain Wu nodded.

From this we can also see that Battalion Commander Ding has no idea about our army's strategy at all, but Battalion Commander Wu knows some. This is not surprising. Battalion Commander Ding has just joined the battle, and it is not surprising that his overall strategy is not surprising. Battalion Commander Wu is a battalion commander of the tank battalion. Tanks are a treasure in this era, and even have a bit of superstitious about tanks. It is said that in military exercises in this era, the leaders did not listen to how many soldiers participated, but asked "how many tanks participated..."

Therefore, although Battalion Commander Wu was a battalion commander, his status was extraordinary, and it was not surprising that he knew the strategy of the entire army.

As for me, Tongdeng and Gao Ping have already started fighting, so it is normal for a company commander to hear some rumor. But what they don’t know is that I know much more than they imagined.

"That's how I think..." After thinking about it, I pointed to the two areas of Tongdeng and Gaoping and said: "The two places of Tongdeng and Gaoping should be considered the same city..."

I stopped and added another sentence afterwards: "I guessed that I have never been to these two places!"

"Tell me quickly! There is not so much nonsense!" Captain Wu was a little impatient.

I felt embarrassed to touch my nose and continued, "From yesterday's war to today, the deepest feeling that the Vietnamese army gave me is... Compared with regular position defense wars, they are better at fighting jungle wars."

"Yeah! Not bad!" Battalion Commander Wu nodded. He must have fought several battles with the Vietnamese army, so he had a deep understanding: "We can still deal with the Vietnamese army on the position. Tanks and cannons were almost half dead after a round. The infantry rushed up. Although the fight was a bit fierce, they could still be defeated. But when these guys hid in the forest, they were like monkeys. They couldn't fight and could not find them..."

"So..." I pointed to Gaoping and Tongding and said: "Our army surrounded Gaoping and Tongding and fought positional wars that they were not good at, or urban offensive and defensive battles, which were not what they wanted in any case. They wanted more people to turn their attention to our direction, so that they could alleviate the pressure on Tongding and Gaoping. Another thing, if our army sent more and more troops to reinforce, or fought a big battle in this jungle area, it would be even more what they hoped!"

In fact, this is easy to understand. During the US-Vietnam War, it was not that the US military fought the Vietnamese Communist Party in a regular war, but that the Vietnamese Communist Party was hiding in the jungle, leaving the US military without knowing where the battlefield was. But now, the Vietnamese army is stronger in terms of equipment and quality than during the US-Vietnam War, but there is one more weakness, that is, they walked out of the jungle and they must guard the defense lines of some important cities!

"Oh!" After hearing this, Battalion Commander Ding and Battalion Commander Wu couldn't help but realize it, and both nodded and agreed with my analysis.

"These cunning Yue Japanese devils!" Battalion Commander Ding couldn't help but gritted his teeth and cursed: "No wonder he let us come in. They want us to ask our superiors for help and to pull more troops in!"

"No wonder they seem to be merciless!" Battalion Commander Wu frowned and replied, "As of the fact that our twenty tanks are guarding here, they will be almost done as long as the artillery bombards us, but they did not do that. I thought their artillery was used in Gaoping or Tongding!"

"Company Commander!" At this time, a communications soldier reported with a walkie-talkie at the entrance of the cave, "It's Commander Zhang!"

I nodded, took the walkie-talkie and said, "Report to the commander of the delegation, I am Cui Wei. We have arrived at our destination and successfully met with the tank!"

"Very good!" The answer from Captain Zhang came from the other end of the walkie-talkie: "How is the enemy's situation? How is the tanker's losses?"

"This..." I hesitated, glanced at Battalion Commander Ding and Battalion Commander Wu, and gritted my teeth and said, "We have just arrived at the destination and don't know much about the situation. But I believe that as long as we cooperate closely with the comrades of the Tank Battalion, with steel-like determination and a spirit of not fearing sacrifice, we will definitely defeat the enemy and successfully break through!"

"Huh... I've grown up!" Captain Zhang's unexpected answer came from the other end of the walkie-talkie: "Then I'll wait for your good news!"

After hanging up the phone, I found that Commander Ding and Commander Wu were staring at me blankly.

I know what I did just now, and I actually failed to rescue us by the Al-Fang troops. If I continue to be so "great", we will undoubtedly face the two regiments of the Vietnamese army, and they are also the main regiment of the ace division...

I don’t know if my approach is right. I only know that I can’t let more troops fall into this jungle. Otherwise, this jungle will be like a quagmire that our army will be unable to extricate itself.
