Chapter 141: Position No. 3

The heaven and earth are bleak and the cold wind is rustling.

As soon as I walked out of the tunnel, I realized that the weather outside was so cold. We had only been hiding in the tunnel for more than ten days, and suddenly came to this small high ground in winter.

Nearly ten hours of artillery bombing made the position full of smoke and choking smell of gunpowder, so I didn't dare to breathe heavily, because with every breath, there would be a strong desire to cough in my throat.

This is not the time to cough. There are murderous intent everywhere in the snow-white smoke, and pieces of bullets may be sprayed out at any time. But I bent down and coughed for a few times, and maybe I will never get up again. So I had to endure the discomfort from my lungs, and followed the soldiers to the high ground with a rifle...

There was no gunshot, no lighting, and the surroundings were as quiet as dead and dark as ink.

This counterattack was limited to the 597.9 highland. The reason for this decision was mainly because the main purpose of this counterattack was to annihilate the enemy. The 537.7 highland North Mountain defended by our army was slightly shorter than the South Mountain defended by the enemy and was not conducive to defense, so it was not in the battle plan for the time being.

The visibility on the position was very poor, and the soldiers could only barely see more than one meter away, but the volunteer soldiers who had been lurking in the tunnel for half a month, each of whom had participated in two or three counterattacks against the surface position, and they had already known the targets on the surface position, so they kept running towards the main peak position No. 3 for a moment.

With a "boom!", a loud noise came from the front, and my heart couldn't help but twitched for a while, and subconsciously fell to the ground. But after waiting for a while, I still didn't hear the gunshots, so I got up and ran forward.

Then there were a few muffled sounds of "boom...", and I accelerated my pace and looked forward. We were successfully occupied by positions No. 4 and No. 0. We did not encounter any resistance from the enemy. In addition to a few bunkers that were deformed, there were some steel and concrete blocks that could not be distinguished from what they were. Several openings of those bunkers were still slowly emitting blue smoke. I guess the soldiers running in front, regardless of whether there were any living people inside, first stuffed two grenades into it.

I ran a short distance forward, crossed the ridge that was only ten meters wide and stood on the No. 0 position. My heart was hanging down.

The surface positions of Shangganling are easy to defend but difficult to attack, especially the No. 0 position is even more dangerous. More than ten days ago, Huang Jiguang sacrificed himself to block the gun hole here and took down the position. So I was worried that I would come here again, and now I can finally let go.

I think this is thanks to our army's large-scale artillery bombing! It was almost uninterrupted and ten hours of continuous bombing, which had never appeared in the history of our artillery. As our enemy's puppet army and the US army, of course they could not have thought of it, and at the same time they were not mentally prepared enough. This was why we were beaten up to pieces.

Especially the volley of rocket launchers that drilled in the few seconds when the attack was approaching, it was even more remarkable. If hundreds of rockets were hit on the position in batches at different times, the effect might not be so good. However, those rockets were all poured on this small high ground in just a few seconds, and the sound and vibration it produced were unimaginable. Many puppet troops hid in bunkers, perhaps not directly blown up, but they were likely to have been deaf, dizzy, or even killed.

We soldiers stationed in the tunnel were very close to the top of the mountain and rushed up in just a few minutes. At this time, the enemies in the bunker might not have woken up yet, so we easily recaptured the two high grounds.

But just as the soldiers stepped up their pace toward the main peak position of No. 3, the few flares shot from the high place made us realize that it would never be possible to seize the remaining position so easily.

"Dadada..." The machine gun sounded quickly. In the smoke, although the light of the flares could only vaguely illuminate a shadow of the volunteer soldiers. But this was enough for the enemy, and the bullets quickly fell down in pieces.

Then another grenade was thrown from above, and there was a burst of bang. Half of the dozen soldiers who had just entered the No. 0 position fell into the pool of blood.

Position No. 0 is between Position No. 3 and Position No. 4, close to the foot of Position No. 3. It is so small that it can hardly be marked on the map. In other words, Position No. 3 is above Position No. 0 and is very narrow. The enemy's grenades are almost unnecessary, and they can hit our heads with just a light shot. However, because the grenades used by the puppet army are oval, they often roll along the incline to other positions when thrown on our position. Otherwise, more than a dozen soldiers in Position No. 0, including me, would have sacrificed without exception.

Why didn’t Li Baocheng on the opposite side take action?

Holding the rifle and lying in the dark, feeling the "Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow..." I couldn't help but be anxious. The enemy's machine guns rushed towards the No. 0 position. For the No. 3 position, No. 0 position has no danger to defend, I am afraid that it won't take long to stay, and the only remaining soldiers we have to sacrifice under the enemy's "travel bullets"...

Position No. 3 is the main peak of the 597.9 Highland, which is the highest position. Its importance is self-evident. Mastering it is actually mastering the highest point. The enemy only needs to push the machine gun upwards, which can pose a threat to almost any highland on the 597.9 Highland. In addition, its area is small, and it is difficult for long-range artillery or even mortars to hit it, so it naturally becomes a must-fight place for both sides of the enemy.

It can be said that if the No. 3 position is not taken down, even if we take down other positions, as soon as the sky is dawn, the enemy may use the geographical advantages of the No. 3 position to condescend to cooperate with the frontal troops' attacks, and they can snatch all positions back without spending too much effort.

The focus of our mission, even the "people fight against people" combat plan I formulated, revolved around Position No. 3. Therefore, before the war, I planned it with Li Baocheng. Each of them brought a platoon of troops to attack Position No. 3 on both sides. I took positions No. 4 and Position No. 0 on the right wing of Position No. 3. Li Baocheng brought another Position No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 on the left wing of Position No. 3.

But from now on, Li Baocheng's troops obviously did not occupy the No. 10 position on time, forming a clampdown with our platoon against the No. 3 position.

At this time, a sudden sound of shouts and explosions came from the direction of the No. 10 position opposite, which made me realize that Li Baocheng's troops were blocked by the puppet troops on the No. 10 position.

Sure enough, a volunteer soldier braved his bullet and ran up to me and reported to me: "Chief of Staff! The second platoon led by Captain Li encountered a tenacious blockade of the puppet army at the No. 10 position and was unable to launch an offensive against Position No. 3 as planned! Captain Li is organizing firepower to step up the attack on Position No. 10!"

"I'm not lazy! These puppet soldiers!" I couldn't help but curse inwardly when I heard this.

If this was also a puppet army in the early days of the Korean War, it would be strange if we could find a lively puppet army on Shangganling after ten hours of bombardment by the volunteer army. But now, they can still organize a powerful counterattack.

It seems that the saying "The battlefield is the best training ground for a unit" is indeed good. The South Korean army trained for five years under the guidance of a large number of instructors of the US military. But what was the result? Their army, known as the "Heroes of Asia", was proved to be "Bears of Asia" on the battlefield. But it was also this army. After only two years in the war, it became a tenacious, cunning, and scheming force...

What should I do now?

I raised my gun and looked towards position No. 3 through the scope, but I could see nothing in the darkness.

Actually, I don’t need to look at it. There is only one small road from position 0 to position 3, and the strange rocks on the road are very rugged and steep. Some people think that there are many stones on the road that are more conducive to the army’s charge, because these stones can provide cover for the charge troops. But this is actually the statement of a layman. This statement may be valid when cold weapons are fought. However, in modern wars, if an enemy grenade is thrown away, the stone fragments will be transformed into high-speed flying shrapnel, and a large number of killing and charging troops will be destroyed.

But the left wing of No. 3 position is not like this, so when formulating a plan to attack No. 3 position, our army was assisted by Li Bao's direction, but now...

"Dadada..." Just as I was in a dilemma, a machine gun sound suddenly sounded from behind. When I looked back, I saw that four or five machine guns had been set up on the No. 4 position at some point, and concentrated their firepower to shoot at the No. 3 position. When I saw the light of the flare, volunteers were running in our direction everywhere.

I couldn't help but scream in secret. This is our reinforcements coming. In the telegram sent by Regiment Commander Zhang, I knew that because I was worried that the enemy would attack from the direction of the Western Mountains, the military headquarters refused to mobilize one soldiers and one soldiers from the 44th Division to the direction of Shangganling. Also, because the 134th Regiment and the 135th Regiment were familiar with the terrain of Shangganling, they transferred supplementary troops to the 134th Regiment and the 135th Regiment, and formed nine companies as the main attack troops for this counterattack.

For these newly joined our army's supplementary soldiers, some of the soldiers even went to the battlefield for less than three months...

Such troops are prone to making rash and impulsive mistakes when fighting on the battlefield, which is that they do not know how to preserve their strength and emphasize fierce attacks and rush.

I was about to shout at them to stop the soldiers from rushing forward, but then several mortar shells came over, and the gravel shot everywhere like raindrops, and my shouts were covered up by the explosion.

"Run!" After a few shells, there was a shout of killing.

When I looked up, I saw the soldiers rushing towards us in groups. Because the ridge was very narrow, people squeezed into positions No. 3 like a tide, and they couldn't stop me at all.

"Dadadada..." The machine guns that were originally pressing us quickly moved their shooting direction. The bullets flew over my head in rows with a sharp roar, and then hit the soldiers.

Blood splattered and screams came one after another. The soldiers fell to the ground one after another like lifeless wooden stakes, falling into the darkness. The blood soon dyed the scorched earth under their feet red.

But the soldiers were still bravely rushing forward. The soldiers in front fell down, and the soldiers behind stepped over the comrade's body and continued to rush forward. One after another. But the enemy's firepower was too strong, and a platoon of soldiers rushed up, and in a blink of an eye, they all fell into a pool of blood...

I looked at all this with a burst of eyes, but there was no way. When the few remaining soldiers beside me saw this, they were confused and jumped up from the hidden place, roared and rushed towards the No. 3 position.

I had no time to stop it, so I had to watch them rush forward.

I knew what they wanted to do. They wanted to get close to position No. 3 to throw out a few grenades to cover the charger's comrades. But before they could take a few steps, they heard two roars. The puppet army only threw down a few grenades, and tens of millions of "shlints" were generated in the gravel area. The soldiers were immediately shot and fell to the ground.

Can't attack from the front!

After I calmed down, I quickly made such a judgment. Although the visibility was very low in this dark night, the road was too narrow, and it didn't take much effort to monitor this road.

But, what other roads are there besides this road? There is no road in the north. The road in the west was originally the best attack direction, but it was blocked by the No. 10 position and could not attack for a while. Then it was only... south?

Even I was shocked when I thought about the south. Because the south was the enemy's backscene surface. Not only was the steep terrain here, but the more important thing was that the puppet army built many anti-aircraft artillery holes here, and a large number of enemy reserves hid in this anti-aircraft artillery hole to launch an attack on our army. In other words, the south is the enemy's position...

It was just south of the south, and I gritted my teeth and made a decision immediately.

Anyway, I can speak Korean again. In this darkness, everyone is dirty, and whoever is afraid of it will come!

Thinking of this, I immediately turned around and crawled towards the puppet army's reverse inclined position. The inclined surface was so shaky steep, almost like a cliff. After a few steps, I had to fall over and climb down slowly. No wonder the puppet army didn't rush up along the inclined surface. This place was so steep, and they have always been not good at night battles. If you rush up from here, it would be no different from seeking death.

After a while, I left the machine gun control range, and the sound of the soldiers shouting and gunfire were much smaller because of a ridge.

After crawling secretly for a while, I felt something was wrong. I am a puppet army now! This is my own territory. If I climb on the ground like this, it would be strange if my "comrades-in-arms" see it and it would be strange if I don't show my legs.

Thinking of this, I immediately got up from the ground, thought about it, and put away the bayonet on the rifle. Although my gun was also an m1 rifle, I think most of the puppet troops at this time would not have bayonets.

I looked at the darkness in front of me with some guilt. I calmed down and took a step to turn around the corner with the No. 3 position as the center, hoping to touch it with the shortest distance without touching my "comrade-in-arms".

But the sky is not willing to do so! When I fumbled in the dark for a while and finally reached the south of the No. 3 position, I found that more than a dozen puppet troops were lined up in two rows in the dark and ready for battle.

Obviously, they are the puppet troops who replace the No. 3 position. Although the terrain of the No. 3 position is dangerous, it is not large in size, and can only be stationed at the same time at most four or five people. Therefore, the puppet troops can only use our combat methods, that is, one casualty and one more is added to the position.

So I started to get into trouble.

Am I going up like this? No!

The puppet troops on the position have not been injured or killed, not to mention that there are more than a dozen puppet troops queuing there, so I just rushed up and not stopped by them to ask questions. That would be a strange thing!

Or... follow me obediently and queue up?

Not even!

There are more than a dozen puppet soldiers in line. If I were behind them, I was afraid that it would not be my turn to go up after the battle. I would also bless them to not recognize my military uniform during this period...

Just when I was in a dilemma, I suddenly saw an empty ammunition box on the ground, and I couldn't help but frown and think about it.

I tried my best to be natural, picked up two stones from the ground and stuffed them into the ammunition box, then covered the lid and put them on my shoulders... and just covered the military cap on my head. It was so seamless! The military uniforms of the puppet army were similar to those of the volunteers. Now with this shell box as a cover, and the surroundings were black. If anyone could recognize me, I really had nothing to say.

So he strengthened his courage, and then pretended to be in a hurry and walked quickly to the No. 3 position. While walking, he shouted arrogantly: "??!???? (Korean: get out of the way!)"

Those puppet soldiers wouldn't know that there was a fraud? They really made way for me. Although I was still calm on the surface, my heart was just a thumping bang! It was really not easy to pretend to be lying to others, and it was even harder than walking from the gates of hell!

Suddenly, he accidentally staggered and immediately there was a scolding beside him: "I said, boy, be careful! The red guy is not a joke with you, it delays the serious business and looks good! Why don't you go up quickly?"
